Phone Button Won't Work With New Radio

Hi All - Hope someone can help. It's a 2012 Liberty with a phone button on the steering wheel. I had a Kenwood DNX6190 installed and the installer was able to get the volume up/down and seek up/down buttons on the steering wheel to work, but was unable to get the telephone button on the steering wheel to interface with the head unit. (The button on the head unit works fine). He called the manufacturer of the interface module (Axxess) and was advised that if he was able to get the volume & scan buttons to work, then it's programmed fine and there is nothing more he can do. I have a hard time believing this.
Anyone run into this? Any advise?
I also emailed Kenwood's Tech Support and they report no issues with that feature.
