Does anybody know of a way to get a used Dana 44 rear axle from the Latin American version of the KJ?

They were not sourced from So-America though. Not imported or anything like that, they were removed from some KJ's prior to visiting the crusher.

Hmmm, I thought only Latin American market KJs came with the Dana 44? Where where the crusher bound KJ donors from?

So America.
Suspicion is they were the KJ's that ran the Con in the early days which at the time was one of the requirements to becoming a "real" Jeep, prior to the "Trail Rated" deal. I can only wonder if there were other reasons they came from So-America, maybe it had something to do with the D44 vs. D35 or 8.25? I am just making crap up here to raise more questions, so humor me.... LOL!

Wouldn't it be easier to get one out of a Rubicon or another jeep instead of going through the trouble of find a KJ from South America and having to import it?

The reason to get a D44 from a KJ is that it allready has the correct mounts on it and it also has the tone ring and speedo pick-up in the axle to begin with.In other words it's a direct bolt in unlike any other D44 rear axle which will need to be modified to work then you got the speedo issue to contend with.
