Okay I just passed 79K miles on my KJ I'm the 2nd owner.. I don't think that my transmission fluid has ever been changed and neither has the sump filter.. I checked my maintenance book and it said to change the sump filter at 79K miles.. okay so my question is should I have the fluid and filter changed??

Next question same goes for my coolant.. I dont think it's ever been changed and I got my KJ with 16K miles on it.. it's just now 79K miles...

I follow routine maintenance on oil, oil filter, tire rotation, and air filter.. which I rotate at every 3k miles and re-balance.. I change oil and oil filter at 6.5K miles.. and air filter I recharge every 4.5k miles..

Yeah, I agree. I would have had ALL of the fluids changed when you bought it to rule out any issues later. I guess you've been pretty lucky in that respect.

DO IT! :D

I would do all the fluids as above including cooling/****** and pump, as well as flush power steering and new oil in diff and do transfer case, if those have not been changed in a while too.
A happy KJ is one that turns with clean fluids, oils and coolant!

No the differential has brand new oil.. because I had a leak that developed from a bad seal.. so when they fixed it they put new oil in it that I'm sure of..

I'd def get the trany flush done. Make sure you get it done at the dealer. It cost me $200. You can change the coolant if you want but the manual says you can wait till 100k. Thats what I'm doing.

you don't ever have to change your power stearing fluid unless you hear it making a strange nosie.

I'd change the axle fluids if they have never been changed. Also check your spark plugs. You really only have to change the air filter every 30k.

Hope I helped.

No point in doing the transmission now. It's already done for. Bet that fluid is black.

Coolant on ANY modern car using HOAT coolant should be done every 2 years, regardless of mileage.
brake fluid, every 24k miles/24 mo
oil every 3k miles
ATF every 30k miles
diffs every 30k
xfer case, 30k.

All of these questions could have been answered by looking in the owner's manual, btw.

Don't listen to ThunderbirdJunkie. Your ****** will be fine. Now if yours had over 100k on it without a trans flush I would be a little worried. Don't delay.

This is pretty easy to do on your own. I've changed my own filters/fluids without issues. icon996.gif I do mine at 30K mile intervals since my KJ is more than just a mall-crawler. You might be able to get away with less-frequent changes if the vehicle only sees the pavement though. Personally, I believe it to be worth the effort to change it more often.

You gonna buy him a transmission in a month? 79k isn't exactly a FAR CRY from 100k. Oops, forgot...you're a professional. You've dealt with this stuff every day of your professional life for years, haven't you?

Anyway
flush is not the same as dropping the pan, and at the point LBL is, definitely would not recommend JUST changing the filter.

And if LBL gets his done, it should be NO LESS than a real flush, and then drop the pan/change filter. Should go through about 20-22 qts, about $300 for everything.

Didn't help at all.

The PS fluid is the second most neglected fluid in a vehicle(brake fluid is the 1st),should be changed at regular intervals also, say every 30k at least.Better then paying for a new R&P.

You should always inspect your air filter at every oil change and change when it starts to get dirty,READ--STARTS TO GET DIRTY,if you wait for it to be dirty it's way to late and waiting for a certain mileage is a early death for your engine and wallet(for bad mpg's).

You should change the trans fluid/filter(s) at least every 60k.Even though it states it does not need to be changed till 60k I would highly recommend changing the t-case fluid at least every 30k since see's alot of abuse.Though great point about actually taking it to the dealer for this service, you gte the correct fluid(ATF+4 only) and you also get a 12/12,000 warranty on it also, well worth the extra $$$.

By my owners manual the F/R diff fluids should be changed every 12k.

Don't forget about the PCV valve,it's $5 at Napa, and should be changed every 30k,no use checking just replace it.

As for the coolant I'd say, from my professional opinion,to change it about every 3-4 years along with a new t-stat and upper/lower radiator hoses.Use only HOAT coolant only,DO NOT USE DEXACOOL OR ANY "ALL MAKES/ALL VEHICLE" COOLANTS.Also do not re-use those factory band clamps.

Make sure you also replace the serp belt and tensioner every 60k,just becuse it looks okay does not mean it is okay.

Again you can adjust the mileages some to meet your needs and how/where the vehicle is driven, hotter climates will place stress on different fluids then a colder climate and vice-versa.

The only way to get loves_off_roading and lil_black_liberty's transmissions done PROPERLY is a real flush, then drop the pan and replace the filter. Should be around $300 at the stealer or any independent shop.
Correct.

Last time done at the dealership for mine cost $280 after taxes for a flush and filter change.

TBJ.. didn't you read what I said?? :p I stated I used the maintenance section of my owners book! Sheesh read man!! :D:D jk...

Thanks guys for all the comments but here let me get you up to speed:
A: Airfilter is K/N Performance Filter.. I just recharge it not replace it and clean it out..
B: I only use synthetic oils 5w30 Horsepower 4x4 Quaker State
C: Differential Fluid is brand new same with Xfer Case
D: Brake Fluid is checked every 6.5K miles when I change my oil
E: Owners Manuel said to change ****** fluid @ 79K along with SUMP filter
F: Also coolant hasn't been changed because frankly I didn't know when to change it..

Oh and also... I am getting my ****** fluid with filter changed for $100..

Make damn sure they use ATF+4 and not DEXIII with a additive(jiffy lube and almost all other "quick lube" places use DEXIII with a additive and call it ATF+4).ATF+4 is a synthectic ATF,DEXIII is not and chemically different.I can't see how they could do a trans flush and filter change using ATF+4 for $100,heck the fluid required alone cost's close to $100(if they do it correctly).
