So I've been working on my transmission replacement and starting to pull the various parts required to remove the trans. And I'm currently stuck as I cant seem to get the drive shaft loose. In the service manual it indicates that on the diff end there should be bolts clamping down the diff side of the universal join pin, however mine does not have these. So I made the assumption that I had to remove the 4 bolts holding the diff end of the shaft from the flare on the front of the diff drive shaft. After doing this I still can not get the shaft to come loose from the plate. Any pointers on this?

What Tom said. The front is just a slip joint. Unbolt the rear (support it while you do this) and carefully slide it out of the transfer case.

13" prybar or similar will help you get it out.

Be sure you are not on an incline, or have the wheels appropriately chocked up so the vehicle doesn't roll when you remove it.

Thanks to all the responses, it was indeed just a bit corroded, a couple of smacks with a mallet to the end of the pry bar and off it came.

I managed to do all the prep for removing the old trans tonight, so I should just be able to pull that out tomorrow night then go pick up the new one on friday, might even be able to drive it by the weekend.

Any tips for setting the fluid level in the new trans?
