I am thinking about adding a light bar to the roof of my sport. For those who have done it, is it hard? Is this something I should let the dealer do?

I've thought about doing this myself also, I think mine would look sweet with it. I've seen the whole kit for sale before, I'm just not all about drilling the roof of my Jeep to install that, plus I don't know if I'd even use it much anyway.

As I recall, it is a very intricate process and it is advised that you only have the dealer do it due to the amount of drilling and wiring required. That could get costly.

I was seriously considering buying the mopar light bar. Im a fairly good mechanic, but it looked pretty difficult. The reasons i didnt: The instructions from mopar are only pictures i think, it costs a good 400 dollars for the kit, 3rd you have to take your dash apart, 4th you need to drill at least 4 or more holes... some are pretty big. I chose not to get it and fabricated my own for under 100 bucks.

There's a silver 02 sport for sale down the road from my GF's house, and whoever had it before had the rene light bar installed...obviously from at a dealer, as the stock switch for it is located in the stock spot.

It looks REALLY good and if I could afford it, i'd do it to mine. If ya want a I can try to snap a pic in the next couple of days if I can remember to grab my neighbors camera...

i did it to my 04 but i didnt have to do any wiring ( export KJ's come with the harness and fuses and relays already)

the wiring is easy if you dont want to drill your roof get a Panel Beater ( body shop) take your pick to do it,

its not just for looks they work REAL WELL

I've got ARB to do it for me and they do it perfectly since I am not good in either mechanic and electric wiring.
I ever took a look at the mopar instructions and it told to drill a hole in the interior panel (under dash) for the lightbar LED. Indeed, this is not necessary as there's already a signal light on dash which is for lightbar, similar to those signal light for headlight - low beam and high beam, handbrake light, etc.

I slapped one on my girlfriends 05 Renegade for Christmas last year. Love the way it looks. I shouldn't say slapped though because this project is not for the faint of heart of the un-experienced DIY'er.

If alls you do is change oil and light bulbs then this project may be over your head. It requires a good amount of time 3-4 hours for a proper job. Took me 3.75 hours. You do need to drill about 8 holes into your roof, and one of them needs to be over 1.5" wide to fit the relay connection and rubber gasket supplied. You do need some silicone to help add to the sealing of the gaskets and rivets you use. The rivets are a pain in the a$$ to put on and you will want to take a break after finishing them.

All in all it was fun to do, but definitely takes some know-how because of all the areas you get into:
-Under the hood around the battery and fuse box
-through the firewall
-Dash taken apart, both A-pillars, Visors, sunroof surround, center light pod, roof liner.

You get into a lot of places so if you want to do it yourself, by all means you will feel accomplished when you do, but set aside plenty of daylight and take your time. If not, pay the dealer. But even some people on here have been turned away by dealers not wanting to do this task.

Good Luck!

Oh and FYI I threw out the LED cause it would have been very tacky. Not to mention it comes with a light up switch, but the LED is to let you know it is on. Personally I think you would have to be blind to not notice that they are on, but thats just me.

I was thinking about it too, but I'm not sure...

I've photoshopped a light bar onto a pic of my jeep - and it looks strange (of course - its at a diff angle), but I'm not sure whether it would suit it - my Jeep doesn't really have an action feel about it.

I'd think about using it on back roads in europe when its REALLY dark - would be useful...
