Anyone know what the rubber mounted weight behind the front bumper cover on a 2012 is for. Looks like it could be 30lbs. Was installing a blue Ox baseplate today to flat tow our liberty.

Don't really know for sure but usually extraneous lumps of weight help dampen out some sort of harmonic vibration that has a resonance that can be felt or heard in the cabin at certain rpm.
I have a kj liberty crd with a small weight hanging off the tail of the transmission. I've seen them clamped to exhaust pipes as well.
Could also be more weight up front helps handling.
Thirty pounds seems like a lot. Wonder what it's called in the parts book.
Weight just slows you down and makes the brakes work worse... throw it away.

These are my best guesses that don't involve aliens. Hope it helps.

Yes, that is what vehicle manufacturers do......it adds mass to an object to prevent vibration resonance. Sometimes weight is added to a vehicle in order to meet a certain countries safety standards or to put the vehicle into a certain weight class, and in some cases such as my fathers old 1992 Ferrari Testarossa, the weight is added to balance the weight distribution.
