What's more important out there? Tread design or sheer size?

If you had to give up an inch of size to go with a more aggressive tread, then which way would you go? For instance...

31" Mud Terrain or 32" All Terrain
32" Mud Terrain or 33" All Terrain

???

Granted I'm sure there are more factors, but this is a start.

Tread design is important for keeping yourself on the pavement or getting through the elements. However, sheer size is very important in order to fit under the Jeep.

31" mud terrain would be sweet as long as your lift accommodates for that size. 31" is pushing a 265/70 tire and adding the additional MT pattern you may be forced into doing some major trimming. I'm under the assumption that you will not fit a 32" or higher AT tire under the Jeep without having major headaches.

Knowing that a 31" tire is pushing a 265/70 size, I would feel more comfortable going with a smaller size and having a great tread design. I run a 265/70 AT and have had major rubbing without modification. I plan to go to a 245/70 MT tire though. Reduce size but heavier, and more aggressive, tread design.

The experiences of people doing expeditionary type travel suggest the opposite, the max tire diameter with a thinner tire that fits well into the wheelwell gives the best overall results. The length of the tread patch is more important than it's width in the vast majority of situations.

So, you're saying I should go with 235/85-16's over 265/75-16's?

235/85-16 will certainly not fit.
245/75-16 will work with 2" lift, but still chance of minor rubbing.
245/70-16 is perfect, but exists only as road or mixed (AT) tire, not as MT
235/75-16 would be perfect, but hardly exists in any type of tire
225/75-16 will always fit and offers good choice of AT's and MT's
