Got lucky and scored that used KJ fuel tank skid plate today from the nice folks at Dead Jeep. Just in time too, as Wifey noticed the torn gouge and JB weld putty patch in the tank from my trip last July. She was not amused. Thankfully she never saw the skid plate I took off and scrapped!

Anyway:

It is really good condition, but going to need a rogering with a 3m scotchbrite wheel or two and a primer and paint.

Historically I primer such things with Por15 and an appropriate paint.

However this isn’t a VW pan, so I figured I ask here as Por15 ain’t cheap and the smallest can is about five times what I’ll need.(it has a lousy shelf life once opened)

Any DIY suggestions?

I always treat skid plates/ rock rails as some of the things that will always to scratched/ dented up over time
So best primer and a flat black paint and have some on hand to touch up after a run
I have a buddy that goes way over board in painting them up, and then afraid to go anywhere where they may get scratched up

Truth! I forgot to include, this would be for the inside where the gunk builds up.

Gunk ?
Never had any issue with gunk building up
Well the front engine skid got lots of mud/dirt until the road sign went on LOL
Yeah, when I pulled the old one it looked like concrete in between the plate and the tank. Dang limestone dust I’m guessing. Guess should have driven through deeper puddles.
