I did the rack weekend before last, all was well last week. Then on Saturday the high pressure PS line was leaking, replaced it and now the steering has a slight whine to it. I've bled it a bunch of times and the fluid is nice and red, no bubbling, stays at the same level. Steering feels fine (not hard) but there's just a slight whine that I don't remember there being before I replaced the hose. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Could potentially still have trapped air.
Generally you will see some bubbling in ATF tho.
You could raise both front wheels off ground, and cap on, then go back & forth, lock to lock a few times (engine off)... lower it down, see if that helps....

That's what I did..although the cap off. I did it till the level seemed stable and there weren't any bubbles. Then just been driving it yesterday/today and noticed the whine. I overfilled it a bit initially but have since sucked some out so it's within the ranges. No change.

My bet is it goes away after a couple days..
Finished up all my lines and pump not too long ago and spent a few days purging the air out each morning just for it to go away once I gave up
I'll keep bleeding it once a day for a bit...cap off and 20-25 near lock to lock turns.
Tim suggested seafoam transtune to me.
I'm wondering whether that might help.

What would that do?

It's weird that it didn't do this after I replaced the rack, only after replacing the line. I bled it the exact way same way both times. :Insane:

Sounds like you're doing it right to me, if it's a reman pump.. I've found that a lot of the Cardone replacements just come with their own whine..
Was very skeptical of the sound of mine at first and didn't wanna run it with air in the system so I kept trying but once I decided that it must just be the nature of the pump, it quieted itself down..
Hopefully yours runs the same route! Or quiets down after the next purge..

Perhaps there was a slight air leak around the high pressure hose o-ring before you replaced it.. enough to let air in, but not fluid out, and now that it's holding proper pressure it has a whine that it didn't when having a slight leak.. just my shot in the dark

I'm thinking there is something to do with the rest of steering system being new and the pump being the OE one with 160k miles on it.

I hope that too!
HJ the Trans tune would help to clean & remove moisture that may have been in pump/ system.

Suction out a bit of ATF+4 and add a bit of Transtune it may quieten it right down

I might give that a shot if it doesn't quiet down soon. Does anyone think this could be damaging to the new steering rack?

does it change pitch when you get near the stops with the jeep running? I swear my PS pump ran dry every winter for 6 of the 9 years and i couldn't kill it. Probably 20 hours without fluid in that time.

Did start making noise towards the end but got a bit weak when i was near the stops or cranking the wheel while stationary.

Duh line replacement, not pump.. you could very well be right. Couldn't tell you from experience because I had to replace my pump before my lines because it became unbearably loud as the weather got colder.
If you had the wheels off the ground and went through the procedure you've already outlined I wouldn't imagine there could be air in the system, and wouldn't think it would wear on your rack.. but then again, i suppose I wouldn't have expected it to whine either.
I know you shouldn't crank into the bump stops but I usually go slightly further at the stops until I hear it make the slightly groan just to be sure I've completely hit the ends and gotten out any trapped air.. found that the slower I turned the wheel the better it worked..
Usually let it idle for a minute halfway through after about 15 turns, just to let the fluid calm down a but and keep it from further trapping air.. then I'll take the last 10ish slower..
I'm sure this is the way you're already going about it, but I'm sure it wont hurt to keep trying to purge out air even if there's none in the system..
Keep us updated if the whine cures up

Same here.. even when I replaced it because it was starting to sound like a caravan or town and country in the wintertime, but even then the power assist never really weakened out.. just started groaning really loudly, especially when ordering coffee in the dunkin drive thru..
Can I take your order? Reeeeeeee raaaaaaaawwww.. :favorites68:
Seemed like the colder the mornings got the easier I lost fluid and the louder it got.. and still the power assist never let me down

It doesn't get worse as I made a more severe of a turn really...it'll start whining once you turn about 1/3 turn each way, and then as RPMs increase it gets worse. Doesn't get worse really if I go to full lock.

Should the line have a restricter on it?

Not my pic BTW. Snatched it off some Maxima forum on a thread about a PS whine. Didn't think the OE line had one. New one doesn't.

Is that the function of the loop thing it goes through under the headlight?

I don't believe so.. but mine does have a metal ring halfway down it, not sure if it's the same thing.. I'll put up a pic
Pretty sure the loop is to add more fluid volume to the system, a smaller version than those whose line runs the length of the bumper

Mine doesn't have that. Found the pics of my old one and it didn't either. Interesting. Thanks for snapping a pic!
