I already posted my problem with my liberty under the thread 2002 Liberty vibration tonite".

Make a long story short.... whats an aprox cost of a new transfer case for an 2002 Liberty Limited 3.7L Auto...? I was told today by my garage that I may need one if the pinion bearing inside the case is not the problem. The cost they gave me was aprox. 2,000. is this in the ball park? Obvisiously they wont just stop at the pinion bearing so Im assuming they will say I need a new transfer case regardless if I do or dont.

Moved to the KJ general discussion......it was a simple mistake people...come on now.

Anyways, to the OP, we need more details like tjkj2002 mentioned...which case do you have, new or used on the new case...and I would assume for that price that it is including labor. $2,000 seems to be an awful lot of cash for just a new case.

I would get some second opinions about the vibration before dropping that kinda change.

You can get a used tcase for under 1k easy.

You can get a used KJ 231 for about $200,a 242 for about $300(all the ones I've seen at least). You can get a brand new(not rebuilt or remaned) right from Jeep for $500(231)-$700(242),at the last time I checked on prices, heck you could get a RockTrac for $1600 brand new.

Apparently in 2006 there was a possibilty of having the NVG 241 or the NVG 231. I have been trying to figure out which one I have. According to jpmagazine.com, the Base 2006 with option package B is among one of the few ways to get the 241. How would I know if I had package B. Is there a better way to tell which TC I have?

Look at the tag on the back of the t-case,it's round and has the model # on it.The NP241 is also known as the 231HD,just a 1/4" wider chain used but otherwise identical to the 231 t-case.

The NP241's used in the KJ's is not the same as the NV241J RockTrac.

Ive talked to a few people and they highly doubt its the whole transfer case. Many of them said they never changed their fluid in the transfer case. Im at 100,000 and I never pulled anything, offroad, or plowed with my liberty. And up until saturday nite the car has never given me any indication that the something was wrong. Just all of a sudden when I left off the gas It felt like going over rumble strips/vibration. It does it under 30mph with no load.

A friend of mine believes firmly its the pinion bearing, cause the driveshaft going into the transfer case has play in it that he feels shouldnt be there. The garage is telling me there is NO WAY in telling if the bearing is bad because its a sealed bearing. Which I find hard to believe cause I know from radio control car racing that if a sealed bearing was bad you can tell by just taking it out and moving it..the bearing felt rough etc. If the garage comes back that I need a whole new transfer case Im pulling it out of there and takin it for a second opinion before I drop that kind of cash.

What driveshaft has play in it? Is it rotational play or horizontal and vertical play?

If its the front driveshaft that has vertical and horizontal play then its probably just a bad cv joint. Kinda common.

Thanks it's the 231.

The 231 and 241 are each part time units with no differential. The 242 adds the full-time option with differential to the unit. The 231 is the command trac and the 242 is the select trac. 241 Rock Trac I believe has not been made available for the KJ, or even the KK. I am unsure if JTE uses different nomenclature or even if they used the 241. I will have to research to see if they did. The KK uses a whole new generation of transfer case and is not the same at all with what is underneath the KJ.

BTW, the 242 Select Trac is a derivative of the unit put in the Hummer H1. The differences are input gear, oil cooler (inside H1 tcase) and some other minor features but basically the same unit. Very stout.

yes, finally an engineer on board.

Supposedly the only way to get the 231HD is to have the '05+ Renegade... my sister has the 241 in her KJ. :)

Well that's what I've seen...

Yeah it's possible. Be easy to retrofit. Same stud patterns, just have to change out the input gear. The only peave I've had about the 231 over the years is the extensionless rear output. Especially if you run a suspension lift (higher propshaft angles) and or bigger tires and or locker. That mainshhaft becomes easy to break. I think the differences with the 231HD are it has 6 pinions and a bit wider chain/sprockets. Maybe a different pitch on the chain.

I really like the 241OR. That is a great unit. It handles much more torque than the Atlas. I've seen them on the dyno. Argh!!. I have always been a lay shaft fan but in that case the chain wins without difficulty. I personally have a 4:1 Dana 300 in my old CJ5.

Thw 242 is nothing like(not even close to) the 218 used in the miltary HMMWV.The 242 was a better version of the 249.The 218's used in HMMWV is a true "Full Time" t-case with no option od 2wd and is 1 ton rated as the 242 is rated at somewhere in the 1/4ton range. The cilivian H1's use the very beefed up 242AMG t-case which is over 2 times as strong as the 242 in the KJ's from the use of a upgraded input/output shafts(32 spline) and a much larger chain. The 242AMG's used in the H1's have been a major nightmare, not strong enough for the H1,I worked very closely with the Hummer dealership in San Diego for 3 years and they hated that t-case since they where replacing them very often, along with those crappy GM electronic ****** that replaced the Turbo400.
