I just bought a 2006 limited liberty today with 103k miles. When your cruising along at low rpm's between 30 and 50 mph the transmission almost acts like it wants to shift back and forth between gears. It only does it at low rpms. When the rpm's are a little higher it doesn't do it. And it doesn't do it at all when your above 50mph. Any ideas. I was thinking maybe a weak altenator.<br />

My transmission does this all the time, its just because the PCM is trying to maximize fuel efficiency.
Are you pulling my chain? It just seems odd the way it does it. It just seems to be constantly shifting back and forth.

In all the vehicles I've had with overdrive, I always switched off the O/D until hitting a consistent 45+ mph to avoid transmission gear hunting, which sounds like what you're describing. You don't need or want the trans in overdrive during city speed driving.

I can turn overdrive off and it still does it.

What does it do when you're going 45? Does it seem like the torque converter is locking?

Mine right before the rebuild used to unlock and lock constantly between 40 and 45. Like every few seconds. I was getting a CEL for it though after it would be driven on the highway.

You can feel the vehicle jerk between shifts. Every few seconds like you say. It might be the torque converter locking and unlocking. Not sure. But when it is doing it the rpm's will fluctuate up and down 200-300rpms. No check engine light for me though.

I'm thinking torque converter may be acting up. Any service records on it? Like when was the last time the ****** was serviced? Might want to get is scanned to see what is happening.

Will a scan work even though there are no check engine light on?

If you take it to a real ****** shop they can watch real time data from the trans while in operation. This isn't just a code thing. May not be that bad to throw a CEL, but with a real time scan they can probably tell what the TC and solenoids are doing and get CVI values and such.

Gotcha. Thanks. When time permits I'm gonna run it or to a transmission shop I've used a few times. He always does me right. I'll update when I find something out.

That's exactly what mine was doing. CEL wasn't on except for after longer trips. Or if it was really hot out, like 90+.

x2 on getting a good trans shop to diagnose it. I spend a few hundred on trying to eliminate little stuff first but wish I would've paid the $90 up front and had a real shop look at it. Dealer was useless too...

There could be codes stored on the computer of the jeep, even if there is no check engine light. These types of codes can only be read with a high end scanner.
