I wanted to get a TruTrac for the rear of my 02 lib. I dont know much about them but I did find this on Wikipedia: "The Detroit Truetrac 912A553 is a clutchless gear-based limited slip differential for the Chrysler 8.25" 29 spline axle. It works in the rear of 2002-2007 Jeep Libertys, but is incompatible with Dana 35C rear axle found in some 2002 Jeep Libertys and might be incompatible with the ESP system found in all 2006-2007 Jeep Libertys. Its gear-based carrier replaces the stock carrier. Ring and pinion gear set up is required."
So Im assuming my lib has a dana 35 but how can I tell if its a dana 35C. Also, does anyone know where I can pick one up and what kind of install am I looking at? Ive never changed out one before. Thanks for any help

There should be a ID tag on your axle. If not you can either get a build sheet from a Jeep dealer. If you know your build date others might be able to tell you what you have. Oh, and some export KJ's had a Dana 44. It might be one of them, I don't know where the D44's went.

A dana35 is not very common in a liberty so idk why you think you have one. If the bottom of the rear pumpkin is flat then you have a chrysler 8.25.

Tru trac will need professional instalation, $200.00 - $250.00 labor. Powertrax you can do yourself and comes with an install booklet. If you're not in a rush for a locker, the new Aussie locker for the 8:25 should be out soon. Good reviews!

The power-trax is a automatic locker and the TT is a gear driven LS. The TT has great on-road manners and the power-trax is not the best for on-road manners. If you are worried about onroad manners or if someone will be driving the Jeep that doesnt understand how the Jeep should be driven with a locker then I do not advise you get the power-trax.

The Aussie auto locker is said to be out soon for the 8.25 and Ive heard its alot better than the power-trax onroad.

Check to see if the bottom of your diff is flat.

I would like to get it in early summer. I only use the libby for offroad use anymore so I like the sound of the PowerTrax. About how much do they cost and who do you guys recommend I purchase it from?

The power trax is $400,in my opinion save up and get a full Detroit locker and you'll be much happier in the long run since you won't kill the Detroit and many have killed the powertrax in a KJ.Lunch box lockers are rather weak and crappy manners, get a trusted locker that won't leave you high and dry.

Ok you guys are not making this decision any easier. HA. I want to wheel a lot this summer and be capable. So I was thinking powertrax or trutrac but now the aussie is in the picture. I WANT TO WHEEL. Guess I should go Detroit?

In my opinion If you are going to take apart your diffs you might as well get 4.10 gears, ARB in the back and a TruTrac up front. I am just going to get all the parts and get it done all at the same time. Probably early 2009.

I crawled under there and the diff is flat on bottom so it is the 8.25. I also noticed that it is 3.73. Are all libs 3.73 and would 4.10 make that big a difference?

I haven't heard much discussion about lockers for the KJ's.

Its been my experience with YJ's & TJ's that lunchbox lockers (AKA LockRite's) are cheap and easy to install automatic lockers but are best suited to 4 cyl engines. Larger engines tend to break the lockers, the axle shafts or the axle's themselves.

Also I understand the front axle on a KJ is a weak aluminum Dana30C. Not even as strong as the Dana30 used in other Jeeps.

From people I've talked to a limited slip differential locker is a wise choice up front and maybe a selectable locker in the rear.

I have a LockRite in the front of my 4 cyl YJ and it works great but I find I can't turn as sharply as before. A sacrifice I suppose.
