I'm not sure if I'm calling it the right word, but it looks like a shock on the front of the steering gear. I'm wondering what you'd notice in steering when it goes bad.

That is called "bump steer".As designed, Liberty's dont have one.
That being said, my Uncle's XJ.. I think that's what the old Cherokee was, had his blow out. Still would steer of course, but if you hit a pothole or big bump, it would jar the steering and cause the steering wheel to move sharply left or right.
I guess that was a dumb question. I didn't even think if our ifs setups would have them. Thanks for ending my stupidity. Lol
The only time I've ever had dw or bump steer it was from a worn out track bar and/or loose axle end bolt. A stabilizer is like a bottle of stop leakThat is called "bump steer".
If you build the SFA right there is no need for a SS,I only run 1 to slow down the steering as using a pump designed for a R&P steering is a bit much for a regular worm type steering box so I had hyper sensitive steering even with 4+ degrees of caster.
