in the off road community with after market parts like the jeep Cherokee has become. Almost as popular as the Wrangler is.
Even though my 2007 will never leave the streets and forever be a Mall crawler I would like it to be as capable off roader even if it is just an allusion.

I would love to have a big metal bumper and a swing away tire mount
I look at the Cherokee with envy

one could dream

I think it's already happening, my first time out with one of the local clubs early in summer we were talking specs/plans. One guy mentioned that it costs alot to lift our ifs rigs. Another guy (Toyota super crawler type) was quick to jump in and point out that there were 3 local KJs who ripped it up out at a tricky rock trail that he wheels.

This was a trail that alot of the JKs present especially stock were not willing to hit.

Full spring Lifts/ bumpers/ lower gears, whatever you need is out there
Can do anything to a KJ that you can to a older Cherokee and the plus is, the KJ will ride better etc
Just stay away from spacer liofts etc
Check out JeepinByAl for anything from Ironman, OME full spring lifts to adjustable coilover lifts, he also has wheels available, lower gears when installing larger tires etc
Everything is out there, its just that you " build" a KJ, not throw on parts like you do a JK Wrangler

Same discussion has been going on for 10-12 years
Have some that know what they will do,
others who will always think that only a SFA rig is any good and if you don't own a Wrangler you can't wheel. Thats even after you have driven around him and pulled him up the hill you made but they couldn't!:happy175:

They are very capable vehicles even in stock form. I think it also depends on where you live as some areas have a higher concentration of Libbys that are actually wheeled. I know that I was surprised to the capabilities the first real off-road event I attended with my Libby. The guys with the typical (Toyota, Wrangler, etc.) vehicles on 38"+ tires gave me props for how the Libby did as they didn't think it would make it through some parts of the trails.

Ya I'm usually the only one wheeling a liberty. Needless to say I shock a few people.

Personally I think the Kj is the best Jeep ever made, because of the independent front suspension!
It is roomy and a much better looking Jeep!
Ever had an SFA on a real pot hole covered logging road?
While the poor Wrangler couple behind me was completely getting beaten up, I nicely aired down & truly left them in my dust..see ya! :party52: :Bye:
I really don't care what the other crowd may say or think about the KJ's.
Lifted, I know they are a solid little tractor, what they are capable of, they are fun to wheel in style, it's all good fun.

Regardless if I ever take it on any "wheeling events", my only real reason to choose a Lib is for the shock value. People get used to em and I'll get an old "Forward Control".

The Liberty was viewed mostly as an Urban Jeep, highly popular as that. It ran well in its sales and a million total were built. Though now in recent years it's gotten what would be coined the ''Cult Following'' Term. Now that people have seen yes there are aftermarket parts, and they're very capable in terms of off-roading, the KJ is now being viewed as such and not an Urban Jeep.

Honestly, I don't care if it ever gets accepted in the Jeep community. I accept it. That's all that matters to me. If ya don't like it, good for you. I don't care

Thank you for all the responses. I will probably never leave the streets and my Libby limited will forever be a mall crawler But I still look at envy at such toys as the JCR bumpers with the swing away tire rack.
Yes I know it is not needed since the Lib has a swing away tail gate.
I just think it the JCR bumper is a good design that is all.
Again thanks for all the responses.

I think people don't like the libby because they are jealous of how capable the libby is.

Just Wrangleritis
many people get this disease which causes a mental block in the left side of the brain.
Currently there is no known cure and you just have to overlook their compulsive manners and remarks in thinking " if you don't own a Wrangler you don't own a Jeep" Its sad since many good honest hard working devoted family men ( and ladies) have contacted the disease.
There are some who are at 50% or so and will actually talk to you you, but others when fully engulfed in Wrangleritis there is no talking to them.
4X4 shops love those folks though :happy175:

Im one of those guys who has always tried to drive something different. Just don't like having the same thing as everyone else. I'm usually looking for the up-model or the oddball when I go to buy a vehicle. The search that eventually led to my KJ was not one of these however. It was driven by practicality, capability, and budget. I wanted a DD with enough capability to be a trail rig, and I didn't have a lot of money to spend. I also have a prerequisite for a manual transmission and that criteria landed me on a Jeep Liberty KJ.

So I pulled the trigger and spent a little bit more than I wanted to on a low mileage, good condition KJ. I like this rig more and more everyday. Its doing everything I needed it to, the community here is awesome, there is a decent selection of aftermarket, and it even has some oddball factor to it. Only in the way that the wrangler guys might look at me funny, but i know with a few parts this rig will do things that people like that would not expect it to. Thats what I love about it and I couldnt be happier with my purchase.

And they tend to squabble among themselves as to who is the pure of the purist with Wranglers.

KJs are one of the cheapest ways to have an off-road capable Jeep....much less expensive than a LOT of ratty CJs, XJs, and TJs....much less nicer ones...

The ONLY comparable bargain is a 4cyl. YJ which will have 4.10s already and with leaf springs is relatively cheap to lift...

I owned a CJ Detroit-locked at both ends on 35's and while it was a privelege to own now that I'm older I appreciate the comfort and quiet of my KJ on long drives....
