"Trick or Jeep"... Oct 23~25 2009

It's time for "Arizona TRICK or JEEP ~ 2009"

When: Oct 23 ~ 25th 2009
Where: Grapevine CG (Goose Loop)... Roosevelt Lake
Trail Run Saturday Oct 24th: Meet 0830 Depart 0900
Chili Fest: Saturday evening
Optional Trail Run Sunday Oct 25th: Meet 0830 Depart 0900
Price of Admission: A small homemade pot of chili

What’s Trick or Jeep? It’s the Arizona version of Halloween… a fun weekend of camping, wheeling and the best chili this side of the Rio Grande!! Did I say a fun weekend with some of the best people you’ll ever meet?? So bring a costume and dress up your Jeep and plan for a great time.

The highlight of the weekend is the Chili Fest Saturday night. Everyone brings a pot of their homemade chili which will be added to a large community pot. Combining everyone’s different style of chili may not sound all that appetizing at first, but rest assured… it’s the best chili you’ll ever eat. Spicy, mild and bland recipes all come together for a taste that’s just right!! If for some reason you’re unable to bring a pot of chili, please bring something else such as cornbread, chips and salsa or desert to share with everyone.

About the Campground: Our site opens at 0900 on Friday, Oct 23rd. We have to be out by 0900 Sunday, Oct 25th for another group that's coming in after us. The Grapevine CG is run by the Tonto Basin Ranger District of the Tonto NF and it is a modern developed area. We have the 100 person “private and gated" Goose Loop reserved for our use only. It's a rather large area, so we will not be that close to other campers in the campground.

Our area includes a large central ramada with electricity, water, tables, two large grills and a large fire ring. There are a a few other small ramadas scattered around our area without water or electricity. We have our own toilets and will not have to share them with other campers. There is one central shared shower facility for the entire Grapevine CG.

Thee fee is $160.00 for both nights and the cost will be divided among those who are camping. If you'll only be attending the run and the Chili Fest on Saturday night, there will be no charge. I’ll have parking passes for everyone to display while they’re parked at the campground.

Trails: There are three trails that have been pre-run by myself, Roland and Vern that we’ll have to pick from. We can have one or two different runs on Saturday and an optional run on Sunday after we break camp. Their difficulty is rated on a 1 ~ 10 scale.

- Cherry Creek Road... rated a 3.0 only because of one large, deep and steep wash you have to go in and drive out the on the other side. It’s a scenic trail with some rocky sections. Suitable for a stock height KJ with A/T tires, tow points and skids recommended.

- Dupont Cabin... rated 4.0 because of some large ruts that have to be negotiated. It’s a scenic, wooded, and rocky trail. Dupont Cabin is a great shaded spot for lunch. Suitable for a stock height KJ with A/T tires, tow points and skids.

(At the end of the above two trails, we can make an optional quick trip up to the unique Anteler’s Café, in Young, for an ice cold sarsaparilla before going back to camp).

- Edwards Park Trail (Massey C37)… rated 7.0 due to larger rocks deep ruts, off camber sections and tricky drop offs that have to be negotiated. Good off road tires, a lift, skids and tow points are required for those driving a KJ. A stock height TJ or KJ do not require a lift.

Directions to the Campground:

From Mesa… take Hwy 87 (Beeline Highway) north for about 60 miles >>>> turn right onto Hwy 188 for 33 miles >>>> pass by Roosevelt Dam and continue another 7.5 miles >>>> turn left on FR84/Grapevine Group Site >>>> drive 2 miles to the camp site on the right >>> enter the camp ground >>> turn left at the stop sign >>>> follow the road to the Goose Loop CG

From Globe (the US 60 and Hwy 188 junction)… go west on Hwy 188 for 23 miles >>>> turn right on FR84/Grapevine Group Site >>>> drive 2 miles to the camp site on the right >>> enter the camp ground >>>> turn left at the stop sign >>>> follow the road to the Goose Loop CG

Mike,
We'd be in on this one but our neighborhood trick or treat party is on the 24th. FlyingBaby is rather excited about it this year, and the kiddo comes first in this case.

How could you say no to this???
