Since my old lead acid was 52 months old, and it was time for an upgrade...
Purchased a 5yr Canadian Tire AGM Ultra group 34- 925 amp @ 0c770CCA@-18c

Have a Snap On OBD2 memory saver, so lets plug that in before disconnecting the old battery.

Moved the cables out of the way for the hold down bracket. It was in there tight.

Threads were dry, time for some anti-seize to make it easier to remove next time.

Now would have been a good time to replace the round battery heat sensor, but since it was still working, why bother... :icon_lol:

This new AGM battery was about $200 +tx new, but considering the (virgin lead) XD Ultra was $300, this should still work good.
5 Year no questions asked replacement * free road side Jump if it ever needs it.:party52:

Nice write-up, TC. I like those memory-savers. I've used mine a couple of times.

Those batteries are beasts, I had one in my old Sierra HD and always started no matter how cold, Have one in my Titan and will put one in my Jeep when the time comes.

And at $200 pretty competitive with other high grade batteries and not much more than a mid grade battery

The Eliminator is hardly a mid grade battery, And this is $200 CDN...

I wasnt making claims as to which grade it is i dont own one i was merly saying $200 for what these guys say is a beast is a great price and i am not familiar with the conversion rate but wouldnt it be less $$$ in american money

I paid $160 for what they called a mid grade battery at autozone

Similar to the ZZ-Top video's...
When it gets real cold outside...Here is a good reason why we need an "Eliminator" Battery!

Even in the Most "Challenging" conditions, both will perform well.

FYI the Can Tire Ulta AGM is made by Exide.
Now you know you buy one off the shelf somewhere, $160 in the USA?

I like it! Couldn't you just smuggle some past customs and we meet you in Vancouver, Washington under a river bridge??

I bet if you shop around in the USA, you may even be able to find one for around $150!
Oh and I also just noticed that Can Tire in this weeks flyer, has a $20 off sale on these batteries.
Time to drag my paperwork into store, and hope they give me the $20 $ off!
Edit: Under their price protection, Can Tire gave me the $22.35 refund !

Results of Midtronics Load Test On AGM Battery

Today got to hook up an extremely accurate load tester!
I was expecting maybe 850CCA....Surprise!

These results were without any overnight trickle charging.
Just straight to the shop after driving 20 minutes and yes 979 cold cranking amps is very impressive!
That approximately converts to 1170 CA at freezing or 32F.

Here's the opposite end of the battery spectrum. I have to say it lasted 8 years in my Rnager as an emergency replacement for a high end Diehard that died fast (three days). Was still working fine but doesn't look like it has much time left.

Any battery you can get 8 years of service, has done well.
That is some serious terminal corrosion happening there though.
Since the AGM's are more powerful and sealed, (free of corrosion problems)
I don't think I will be buying lead acid batteries again.
It would appear that these Exide Edge AGM Batteries are great quality & priced right.

Guess I'm old school, but what ever happened to AGM's needing a different charge rate from regular lead/acid? Used to be that since they didn't outgass they'd be damaged by high charge rates.

My only experience is with inverter battery banks on houseboats. All the better inverters had different programmable charge settings for battery type, and became chargers as soon as the boat's put back on shore power. Any of these inverters are "smarter" than your car's charging system.

Any AGM battery will appreciate the higher regulated voltage outputs below 15 volts, 14.7v is perfect.
Since AGM are deep cycle & are able to store more amps than conventional lead acid batteries, they offer longer reserve times, and no catastrophic failures.
As fully sealed, most do not vent, and no corrosion to battery terminal ends will ever be found.
Even though I used an Exide edge AGM, still the best or premium AGM remains to be an Odyssey battery. ( I have one currently in my sedan)
The bonus is they can be used inside boats & motorhomes, and you don't have to worry about breathing in the toxic fumes produced by charging.
I use a C-Tek charger that has both float and de-sulfation characteristics, at 14.7 volts.
Even though I have no idea as to the equipment regarding your inverter/charging equipment/set-up on boat, any good battery charger that is considered regulated & automatic, (goes into trickle mode when battery is sensed fully charged) will work well on AGM's.
