Passenger Side Water Leak

My Jeep has just failed the overnight heavy rain test :favorites68:
If there is one thing that drives me nuts :Insane: it is interior water leaks!
Luckily the headliner is dry & appears to be collecting in the deep WeatherTech Floor mat.
I don't think it is coming from the cowl as air box seems to be dry.
It does appear to be dripping down from the front pillar, far right side.
This leave me to believe it may be that darn roof seam where the fine plastic strips run ahead from the roof rails, or a windshield leak.
Anyone removed those 2 trim pieces marked by * in pic?

Once those trim pieces are off, will use some polyurethane & seal it all up, incl side of windshield just to be on the safe side & see what happens?

Tim,

I think you have to removed the roof rails in order to get those plastic pieces out.
The instructions are in the FSM. I'll point them to you later tonight if you haven't found it by then. I think I came across it when I was searching on how to remove the roof rails off for my light brackets.

I know that the top of the windshield is not sealed very well. I just put some clear silicone to seal the top of the windshield.

I'd agree that it's more likely your windshield. Knowing how well you take care of your KJ it's unlikely there's any rust under there - probably the seal around the upper corner of the windshield is the culprit.

With passenger door open, and the dash plastic end cap pulled off, even inside the cover was wet..eek!
Does one have to remove those roof trim pieces to get the windshield re-& re?
I got the feeling this is not a fun situation to be dealing with on this KJ.
BTW page 1 -post 6 on above link shows the trim piece off & it does look like rail has to come off..fun-NOT.

i think so. I remember coming across that you did when I was browsing through the fsm.

Open the doors. Remove weatherstripping. You'll find 7 screws. Pull the trim piece off (held on by strong Velcro) and walaa you're in like flynn. Had that issue before. Rust under windshield. Tried urethane sealer and did not work. Don't put sealer sound the screw holes either. Can cause a gap and make it worse. Check to see if there's rust. Common on the pinch weld. Had my windshield removed and roof sandblasted to have new metal welded in and paint. Paid 400$ for the body work and 125$ for a new windshield.

Taped hose to passenger side & it was not long before water was a dripping from A-Pillar again :favorites68:
Oh well, orders are to attempt re- & re without breaking it.
It it breaks, no glass until Monday :blah:..further update once I know what is going on...

So it is a windshield leak then? Not an issue with the weld seam?

What weld seam?
Tech at glass shop said all looked good yet the windshield was re & re and yet it still leaks a bit when applying water like in photo post #8.
I have removed the trim piece that leads up to the rail & cleaned it up.

Sealed the 7 screww holes, which it did need.
Next is looking at the air intake when I get a chance.
What I still cant figure out is how the heck water is dripping inside the windshield pillar..***...nightmare.

The weld seam is the part where the roof meets the side pillar. You'll see a line going straight down

Thanks teeje. We only had light rain throughout the night, and paper towels were stuffed in at A-pillar where it was dripping before, all dry right now.
Will have to perform other hose water tests, to see what's really going on.
Next will be inspection around the cowl air intake, and then onto roof rail bolts when I have some time.

Might be leaking under the windshield on the pinch weld. You can inspect it if you have a mirror or you can use your camera on your phone and run alone under the headliner have someone pour water along the windshield until you see where it's leaking. That's what my issue was. Windshield needed to be pulled because the top seal will not stop it from leaking if the pinch weld the Glass sits on is rusted

Had mine pulled and roof sand blasted and painted with new metal welded in. 400$ for that and I got a new windshield for 125$

Since I just paid shop to have the windshield re & re ..Once the cowling was removed....
Then why is the 12 year old dirt still caked on the windshield??????
Looks like he did not do the re&re at all ! FRAUD!!!
When I dropped off the Jeep I also asked him to vacuum around the air intake screen..

Vacuum screen, ya that never got done....Does not appear he ever removed the cowl!
X -in pic is a cracked seam but a piece of rubber molding that goes somewhere unknown at this point.

& this body seam looked a bit cracked like, so I used silicone to fill it in.
Along firewall foam seam I filled it in a bit too.

Well I guess someone at the glass shop has some explaining to do.
I can not see any glass pro re-install the windshield, and leave the 12 year old dirt caked on for installation.
I just got had. Hard to believe....

Definitely looks like a ripoff to me!
That one weld is really suspicious to me. Not sure if it is the source of your leak but it sure doesn't look right. I don't remember seeing anything like that when I pulled my cowl off. I'm guessing the weatherstripping is just a scrap piece that someone didn't remove. I can't think of where it would belong.

Is your cowl WS intact TC? I wonder if they trimmed it to fit and the extra fell in and they didn't trash it. I don't remember any small pieces in mine. :shrug:

Yes the cowl seal is perfect length, & in one piece.
I am going to go down to the Jeep, since I removed that little piece & compare it to the full length cowl seal. Will edit in a pic in a while...

Ya that weld is suspicious. Is it normal where the bolt goes thru, to have it look like a plate welded over top like that too?
