My 2002 Export 2.5 CRD KJ Sport came out with a hefty Steel Skid Plate under the engine!
I think all Sport models came like this in those days....maybe only the Export models?
Maybe you may be very lucky in finding one in a scrapyard!
I agree with Ksat but try the following as well when the failure occurs.
Swap over the Starter Motor Relay with an identical one inside the Fuse/Relay Box under the hood.
Re-plug fuses #8 and #28 inside the Fuse/Relay Box in case they are making poor contact.
If that does not help then make...
There is always a good chance that it is a wiring problem....I have pulled off about 15 wiring faults after a front end shunt!
Best to download the 2006 KJ Service Manuals here....describes how charging works and the Wiring Section 8W has the Wiring Diagrams!
Page 8W-20-2 shows the "Generator"...
Be careful when replacing Alternators in that they are not all the same...there are differences between years and models ie. gasser or CRDs....the regulation methods do vary between models and years.
The thick wire coming off the RED Battery connector going to the large lug on the Alternator is...
Where are you located? I am in South Africa but ausjeepoffroad.com has a lot of Fixed Vane CRD owners with some good advice!
Be careful when cleaning the MAP Sensor....I only use Brake Cleaner Spray on it...no brushing or scrubbing!
I got sudden black smoke on my 2002 Export CRD when one of...
I have maybe been incorrect about my posts as regards the Curved Flywheel on the manual KJs.
This I now think this may only be relevant on the CRDs that have the Manual Gearbox with the Dual Mass Flywheel!
Going through the documentation it seems that the Gassers without a Dual Mass Flywheels...
You can put a Ohm-meter across the microswitch contacts...with the wires disconnected...to check if the contacts make and break when operated. Then with the meter set to DC Volts you can plug the wires back onto the switch and see if voltage gets transfered across it when it is activated...
Yeah the micro switch usually goes bad...there was a Tech Tip issued for it years ago....I think it gets water inside it!
I have not had any problems with it on my Export 2002 CRD but looking at the microswitch it looks like a standard microswitch you can buy at any Electronics supply shop.
In...
The Export CRDs ie. "Cherokees" do not have lift pumps in the fuels tanks....no pump at all other than the CP3 pump up front. The wiring harness I believe is mostly in place!
Some owners do fit them but I have never had a problem with my 2002 2.5 L Export CRD.
No EGR on the 2002/2003 Export...
If you do not already have the manuals...download them here:
www.colorado4wheel.com/manuals/Jeep/KJ/
Download the 2003 KJ manuals but also very important is to download the section: "2.5_2.8 export diesel" which covers our Export models!
You will have disk brakes at the rear....mine came out...
Welcome....I bought my 2002 2.5 CRD new 20 years ago here in South Africa...is now about to hit 200,000 kms!
Best vehicle I have ever had and it will stay with me for a bit longer I hope!
Main problem I had with it was that my GF decided to crash it into a tree....this damaged a lot of the...
Welcome! Your CRD will be the "Export" version...I have the 2002 Export 2.5L CRD.
Your Export CRD is pretty close to the USA models...2 things we have that make the USA owners very jealous are:
We can fold our outside mirrors back and forward again with a switch on the door...useful if you...
Could be a wiring/earthing problem whereby a wire is earthing to ground or to another random wire....these Jeeps are getting old and wires chafe through to chassis/engine or other wires.....very difficult to find! Engine/chassis grounds get rusty and dirty!
I fixed about 16 wiring issues as...
What year/model is your Jeep?
CRDs have the alternator pulley with a built-in clutch that smooths out the effective start-stop action of the rotating engine...this pulley can fail. Early pulleys were "dry" inside and tended to fail sooner than newer pulleys which are filled with grease.
My 2002...
Put a voltmeter across the horn and measure the voltage...you expect to get +12 volts there.....if not then check that the earth-side of the horn is in fact going to Ground and that +12 volts is there with respect to chassis/engine!
Have you checked the fuse-box under the hood?
Johnny O has...
The Actuator Pin Assembly can fail....this can switch on all the Ignition lights but that last bit of movement to move the ignition switch that last degree to start sometimes does not happen....a fairly common problem!
First check if the Starter Motor turns over in both Neutral and in...
The AA and AC numbers are merely Revision Numbers ie. some slight improvement was implemented in the AC part but they are both compatible!.
The Clockspring is not difficult to replace....the new ones come with a plastic shipping wedge holding the assembly in place.....you pull out the shipping...
