Removed front driveshaft just now. Found the rear cv was going out. The boot is torn. So, I'm gonna drive it around tomorrow without the driveshaft and see how it goes. AND my front diff has a leaky pinion seal.
..oh AND I got a nice burn on my hand from the Catalytic converter. That thing...
Oh, just for the record. The NAPA greasable ones I removed had water in the rear joint. I assume water penetrated the seal because the grease was whitish in color. I've been using the red lucas grease and it was a light pink color sort of like strawberry yogurt. Also 1 end of the cross was...
Ok, so I installed the u-joints. It basically just changed the vibrations. I do think the vibes are gone from the rear and driveshaft. now I can tell that I have vibrations coming from the front too. The steering wheel vibrates and I can feel it on my feet too. I'm thinking the front driveshaft...
used something like this:
I didn't used any of the cups that those arrows point to.
as for the vibes. pretty much just changed them. I think it's up front now. Because of the new u-joints I can focus more on the steering wheel vibration I'm getting. The front of my KJ is effed.
Nah. You just undo the boot clamp at the driveshaft end and the driveshaft just slides right out. I was running just zip ties on it for at least 12K miles. Worked good. The boot is pretty beefy and flexible. The u-joints are easily pressed out with a tool I rented from advance auto. They pressed...
nope. Although I've had it since practically new and I don't see any signs of a weight falling off. I have spicer u-joints coming. If those don't do anything I may have the driveshaft looked at. Maybe I bent it. Who knows.
I have a vibration and its in my seat. It starts around 45 mph and pretty much cuts off over 50. I also have a resonance type annoyance around 55 mph. It is present when I maintain speed and accelerate. It also appears when decelerating at lower speeds and is more of a rumble since the rpms are...
I musta got some bad ones or something. They're just a pita for me, I have to grease them. I might as well get non-greasable ones and be done with them.
Ok, so I did some crafty cross referencing and found that:
5-785x
should be the correct u-joint. Hopefully someone can confirm.
Also known as SPI-5-1310X
which is the new part number I think.
Does anyone know the correct part number for spicer u-joints? It seems to be some kind of secret or something.
I'd like non-greasable type. I have some of those napa greasable ones now and not only are they a pain in the A, but they are vibrating bad after only a year. Anyway, if anyone knows...
Got the new links ready to go:
Operation, "make front end quieter".
DONE:
here's the old ones:
On the right side, the bolt was completely seized to the link on the bottom end. Good 'ol friend PB Blaster worked like a charm and I was able to salvage the bolt. I love my wire wheel on...
You should get some of these bad boys!

I just have to ask. Why 2 grand?
Yeah, weird, but I think you have an intermittent situation sitting on top of an intermittent situation. Usually with these it is the battery. Start there, get a good one. May I ask what type you have now?
The battery might check out ok, but it sounds like it can't sustain it's CCAs very well. You say it acts up half warmed up. Well, the battery could be drained from starting it and won't get charged up again for a while. Starts cold; once again you shut it off (last night or whatever) with the...
