2003 Liberty 2.4L - Is it possible I have the wrong starter? (SOLVED)

I was going by your statement that I should as to see one to compare. None of the part stores have starters for my car in stock, and all have to order them in. So if by real parts store you mean one that has anything I need on hand so I can look at it, then no, I don't have "real" auto parts...

2003 Liberty 2.4L - Is it possible I have the wrong starter? (SOLVED)

Then no, there are not real stores. When I replaced it back in June the first time, every place I called had to order it in. I have AutoZone, Advanced Auto, O'reileys, and Napa.

2003 Liberty 2.4L - Is it possible I have the wrong starter? (SOLVED)

There are, but this starter is under warranty, so for the moment, trying another one is free.

2003 Liberty 2.4L - Is it possible I have the wrong starter? (SOLVED)

I used a contour gauge to get a better masurement of the ****** to flywheel distance. Came out to 10mm. That looks like it would allow enough bite on the starter. Went to a diff AZ location, and they are getting me a third starter to compare to and try.

2003 Liberty 2.4L - Is it possible I have the wrong starter? (SOLVED)

Engine serial number is on the back side of the cylinder block. There is only a couple inches of gap between it and the firewall. I can't get my head back there to look, and can't get my inspection camera to route around things. So at this point, I can't say 100% for certain. There is no...

2003 Liberty 2.4L - Is it possible I have the wrong starter? (SOLVED)

I need to check that still. I assume I can look for numbers on the engine to check?

2003 Liberty 2.4L - Is it possible I have the wrong starter? (SOLVED)

The most recent one I put on was done under warranty exchange, so the previous starter had to be returned to the store to get the new one. For the one I did back in June, the old one has already been returned for the core charge, because the jeep was running after I put it in. No bushings in it.

2003 Liberty 2.4L - Is it possible I have the wrong starter? (SOLVED)

That's what I thought, but when you search part stores for starters for the 2003 vs the 2004, they usually show different starters. The most mopar specific sites say the AB fits my 2003, but not the AC.

2003 Liberty 2.4L - Is it possible I have the wrong starter? (SOLVED)

I have that. What I need to know is what the differences are between the two part numbers, so I can tell whether or not AZ gave me the wrong part or not.

2003 Liberty 2.4L - Is it possible I have the wrong starter? (SOLVED)

I have the manual. What I can't tell is whether or not the differenece between the AB and AC is significant or not, and if there is a way to tell them apart.

2003 Liberty 2.4L - Is it possible I have the wrong starter? (SOLVED)

I have some maintenence receipts from the past owner. In 2019 a Chrysler-Dodge dealer replaced the starter with part number R6041436AC, which is the remanufactureed 56041436AC. Various mopar sites say the AC is not compatible with the 2003 though, but some say it is.

2003 Liberty 2.4L - Is it possible I have the wrong starter? (SOLVED)

Does anyone know the difference between part number 56041436AB used for the 2003, and 56041436AC used for the 2004 and 2005?

2003 Liberty 2.4L - Is it possible I have the wrong starter? (SOLVED)

That's why I isolated the starter from everything else and tried it with the remote start switch hooked from the solenoid to the battery. The problem persisted even when not going through the relays and other ignition wiring. All that was hooked up was positive to starter, and then grounds...

2003 Liberty 2.4L - Is it possible I have the wrong starter? (SOLVED)

I have a couple other threads here from me chasing down a starting problem. It turns the engine for a split second, and then disengages and just spins. I thought I had it narrowed down to the battery cables, but I just replaced them, and the problem persists. Yesterday, I disconnected the...

    How does my flywheel look?

Here is a still shot of the area that looked the worse. It looks like it's just scraped on the fronts, and not missing much material. It shows the "shadow" (for lack of a better term), that I think is where the starter teeth used to engage on it.

    How does my flywheel look?

Starter teeth look fine, but I just replaced it. The one I just replaced was put on in June though, and the teeth look fine too. It doesn't look like the teeth are engaging in far enough. I measure from the mounting face for the starter, to the back of the fly wheel, and it's about an inch...

JeepCables battery cable installation help!? (SOLVED)

Yes, one to the battery, one to the alternator, and the fuse is on the wire to the alternator. The OEM wires have a thinner wire, I think it said 10ga on it, so that it burns out there if something happens.

JeepCables battery cable installation help!? (SOLVED)

Here is a picture of the final mounting of the fuse and PDC wires. I drilled two holes in the battery tray below the two that held the old wires. The fuse is zip died to the lower holes, and the other cable is zip tied to the oringal ones. PDC connection shown with proper wires attached here...

    How does my flywheel look?

I am still diagnosing a starter issue. I took the starter off today, and recorded a video of the flywheel while rotatin the engine. There is one spot where it looks chewed up at the front of the teeth, but the starter should engage beyound that area. There has been a few times when the...
