so yeah this is off topic as far as KJ ,sortta
but 0-w40 ,really
"it looks like apple juice daddy" (my 3 year old was helping)
it sure flowed like juice
seems very very thin but meets mfg spec for all weather
Mobile 1
I have to trust that this is ok to use because that is what the mfg says
just like 5-w20 in a 9000# truck with a 5.4L engine
yet we run 10-w30 in our Jeeps
I was told "yeah you run the ticker oil because the Jeep motors are
loose compared to newer engines and even more so compared to most imports" ,this is from a tech at the local Jeep dealer

what say you all to this?

i read an article once that actually suggested for flow characteristics, 0w-xx is actually the best you can run. The argument was that when cold, oil is too thick and oil pressure causes the bypass valve to be opened in the filter, so you are circulating unfiltered oil until the temps rise enough to "thin" it.

makes sense from an argumentative standpoint, but not sure how it actually applies in practice.

I've ran 0W-40 since it was new, a dealer down in Nevada put 5W-40 in it saying Chrysler had changed that, havevn't heard any other dealer saying that or anything on the web site.
I just change it at 5000 miles or 90 days and a wix filter.

Similar to Canadian's that love their Weather Related stories...
KJ Country loves their oil related threads!:angels25:
Who said we run 10W-30 in our Jeeps? My KJ cap says use 5W-30!
There are numerous choices and it should be based on your outside air temperature!!!!
For instance I might use Dino 10W-40 if I was running the jeep in 100 degree plus all day.
Or at the other end of temperatures lets say-30 C, I would know that Synthetics flow better than dino oil and Mobil1 is rated to flow down to -47 C in 5W-30..so that is what I would use!
The only time I would use zero weight anything is if I was headed far north in winter and expected temperatures below -45C.
The general rule is to check your owners manual (vehicle specific) and also use a Viscosity chart based on outside air temperatures & type of oil used.,.:driver:

I said we run 10W-30 in our Jeeps ,we did and still do
it is on the cap for my TJ
I put the 0W-40 in the new ride because that is the oil that meets MFG spec for "all weather conditions"
the spec ,to be exact, is "VW 502.00/505.00" and there are only 2 oils that meet this spec
1 is made by Castrol and is dealer only ,says Castrol on the oil cap but they do not sell a "shelf" oil that meets spec (can not walk in an auto parts store and buy it) the other is Mobile 1 and is recommended by my dealer
and the only oil that states that they meet the spec on the shelf
The owners manual stats that "an alternative to VW 502.00 would be a good quality syn. oil in a 5W30 if 0W40 is not available"

I also thought that 0W40 was way to thin
and considering that the engine oil also cools and lubricates the turbo
I thought it would call for at least 10W30 but I was wrong
consider this also the GM Duramax calls for 5W40 and the VW TDI calls for the same and the GM engine is 3+ times the size

i'd imagine that newer technologies will bring differences in oils from time to time. you might see a slight increase in power and mileage with oil that flows easier. i'd also imagine that as long as you don't have leaks and it doesn't drop your oil psi to an unsafe level it should all be fine

I have heard of using that mixture before.... for engine flushes!
It must be one clean motor now!

DO Not Use ATF in your engine oil.

Used to run Dexron/MerconIII with 10w40 in my '89 Escort 1.9. Bought it used with a valve tick, and my mechanic poured that ATF in it with the engine running and the tick was gone in less than 10 seconds. He suggested to run one weight heavier (10w40 instead of 10w30) and substitute one qt of oil for one qt of ATF. Did it that way for 70K+ miles before some chick pulled out in front of me and I totaled the car. Ran great the whole time, no sludge, no smoke, and no valve tick.
