I'm doing a rebuild on a 03 3.7l heads redone and all new bearings. Tore the bottom end apart and crankshaft has some scoring on the 2 and 3 main bearing surfaces. Got a good low mileage used crank for a good price, looks flawless. I know about the select fit main bearings, my question is are the bearings matched to the crank or to the block? The old crank has the lettering code TSTT, the new crank has UUTU. do I use the old crank bearing sizes or the new?

My interpretation of the attached is that you would use bearings based on the crank markings. I just got a reman crank kit for my 02 and it came with the appropriate sized main and rod bearings based upon the milling required to refurb it.

Plastic gauge, plastic gauge , plastic gauge. Use it on all the journals.

Make sure the reluctor ring is the same or it will not crank. Must use new bolts. These are torque to yield bolts.

Don't you have to have a bearing in there to use it? That gives the final clearance with bearing right?

Yes use new connecting rod bolts are a must. I didn't pull the heads on mine I just had a bad main and two bad connecting rod bearings but new head bolts should be used. Did that when I did the HGs a few years back.

I had to swap the reluctor from the old to the "new". Good call rjkj2005

new head bolts, new connecting rod bolts, planned on changing the reluctor ring, i bought main bearings for the old crank that turned out to be bad, i'm just confused if the bearings match the crank or the journals in the block based on the lettering on the crank.

I would mic it and not with a dial caliper either. The only way to know if it is over or under bearing since it did not come with bearings and could of already been machined at some point.. A lot of work to redo if you have wrong bearings or bad crank with run out.

Maybe you could rent a mic set from Advanced ect just be sure it comes with a standard to 0 it in.

The reluctor ring bolts are a straight torque bolt. Any time a torque sequence requires turnning the bolt an additional degree turn. They must be replaced not reused.

On the heads you torque them down to 20. Then kept going back over and over again at 20 till they all clicked with out tighten any longer. Sometime you must repeat the torque at 20 pattern 5 or more times. Before the two 90° torque patterns.

The crank is a factory crank, hasn't been reworked. low mileage out of a wrecked liberty. I thought I read somewhere that the differences were with the block journals and the cranks were uniform. I guess I read it backwards. I will buy bearings to match the new to me crank and mic everything before installation as well as checking clearances with plastigage before final install. Thanks for the help and if you have anything to add, please do!

Sorry ...I should of suggested "You might consider using"...instead of "I would"

The reluctor ring screws are not TTY - the rod bearing, crank bearing and head bolts are all TTY though.

Personally I'd get new reluctor ring screws - they're easy to tear up when removing them from the crank. New ones are cheap insurance to make sure the ring doesn't come loose later on. There's only three of them - about $3 at the dealership.

One more question. How much oil clearance do these things need? I have found a couple different ranges and am not sure which is right.
