My mother has an 05 Limited that she bought used. It has everything you would expect a "Limited" to have....except ABS! She found this out the hard way by sliding off the road one day when it was raining. Now she's terrified to drive it. My parents are talking about spending about $800-$1000 on "rain" tires to see if that would help with traction.

My question is this....would "rain" tires really help enough to warrant spending that much? I know they would disperse water better, but hey, if the road's wet then the road's wet, ya know?

Any other suggestions would be great because she's wanting me or my wife to pick her up from work everyday when it's raining now!!

Yup, ABS was an option on all libbys till 06. New tires would make a world of difference since the stock tires suck at everything. It would be kinda hard to find tires for $800 though. If you tried hard enough maybe? I wouldnt pay over $400.. O:)

assuming it's a 4x4, I would lean towards some cheaper (compared to rain tires that is) all terrains. You can get REVO's (which myself and many others highly recommend) for in the general neighborhood of $550-$600 if you play your cards right. I've not lost traction once in the year i've had my revo's on, and i've been in some pretty serious rain. Have not had any snow to try them on yet, i'm praying for that this winter [-o<

With the crapyears, i found myself on the side of the road a couple of times thanks to losing traction. Being in Birmingham I doubt you'll have any snow to worry about, but IMO you'll get the same performance, or damn near it, with all-terrains vs. expensive rain tires.

well, she got em put on today...she told me they were "special rain tires" the other day but they're just yokohama geolander ht/s. So, other than not being goodyears, they look about the same as what she had before. oh, and they were $675....I don't know who quoted her $800, but that's what she told me. Anyway, I guess they might make a small difference, but I kinda feel like she prematurely spent $675 cause there were only 10,000 miles on the goodyear HP's.

And 10,000 miles is right about when the stock tyres, no matter whether they're STs, HPs or SR-As (or RS-As) start to go bad!

well, she's got the 17" rims so the size is 235/65R17....I guess being 17" makes a big difference. I think they were like $145 a tire at our local tire shop plus the road hazzard crap. I know that's alot more than tirerack but once you factor in shipping and then getting them mounted somewhere, I guess it's not TOO bad?

I've got 25,000 on my SR-A, and they're fine. I plan on replacing them at around 30,000-35,000. Just before next winter sets in.

I had two Bad Years go bad by 23,500, ply seperation on the last one, guess they don't like rocks, bought 245/70 Finnish Nokian Vatiivas for it. They have a similar thread to the Revos, same specs/warranty, almost $50 less. A transplant from Vermont where they are very popular suggested them. Great tire as far as I can see so far.
