07 6 Speed Rebuild

Hi All. I have a 07 with the manual trans. It has around 100k and I've put about 17k on it. It started making noise when it was cold and I brought it in to have the trans rebuilt and clutch replaced. I called the local 4x4 place and a transmission shop and they both referred me to a trans shop for manuals. Turns out he doesn't do any R&R and referred me to a mechanic they work with.

The trans was removed and brought to the trans shop and they rebuilt it to the tune of $2000. $1500 in parts and $500 in labor.

Now I'm working with the other mechanic and things aren't going so well. I asked them to install a LUK clutch kit which they said they would, after doubling the price of the parts. Then they called me about the flywheel, it is bad. They ordered one which I will assume is whatever they can get from O'Reilly's. Now they called about the clutch master cylinder, which I will also assume is also whatever they can get down the street.

I've been given a price of $2400 for the clutch, flywheel, master cylinder replacement. I still can't believe $4400 and counting for a manual trans and clutch. Is that normal for one of these transmissions? I wonder how much more the dealer would have been.

Along with the cheap parts, I'm concerned about if the flywheel is curved or not curved, and if they got the right one. Or does it matter if the flywheel and clutch are all replaced together?

Buying parts from cheap parts stores is the first bad idea for them
Depends on what the flywheel looks like

My thoughts as well.

Would that be the old flywheel, the new flywheel, or how the new flywheel compares to the old flywheel? I'm hoping that if they look the same I'll be ok. But that's all hope, no facts to back it up.

But most times depending on miles etc flywheel will need to be replaced or resurfaced but since KJs have a curved one can not do

Sorry for the newb questions. If both the flywheel and clutch are replaced together, does it still need to be a curved flywheel? Or can it be flat?

Is there an easy way to tell if the correct flywheel was used? What would the symptoms be if it was wrong?

We cannot get hold of the 2007 KJ manuals but all the previous years manual such as the 2006 KJ tell you that the flywheel is slightly curved....place a long flat edge across it.
They state that fine scratches can be cleaned off with some abrasive paper but machining it flat is a definite no-no!

Then the correct clutch plate needs to be fitted.

There must be a reason why they went for a curved flywheel!

I presume the 2006 and 2007 clutches will be similar...you can download the 2006 Jeep KJ Service Manuals here:

curved was because people can't drive and it's supposed to help reduce chatter on engangement. guess what, it still chatters.

reading tyo0's posts, I get the bad feeling he got taken to the cleaners from everyone, more than likely out of the shop's stupidity/ignorance and not malice.

I appreciate the replies. I got the Jeep back yesterday after it being away 5 weeks. It is what it is at this point. So far so good. I do have a 3 year 36k mile nationwide warranty for whatever that's worth.

I haven't used a normal mechanic in many years, but I haven't done a clutch in a few decades and got lazy. The price gouging on crappy parts is ridiculous. If anyone could answer these question I'll go lick my wounds (aka checkbook).

If both the flywheel and clutch are replaced together, does it still need to be a curved flywheel? Or can it be flat?

I'm thinking I don't have a curved anything anymore. It's probably all flat. And if it is all flat, is that going to be an issue in the future?

I would have asked for the old flywheel back, My 04 was in great shape after towing and teaching 2 kids how to drive a 5 speed at 150k . Anyway back 7 years ago when I changed my clutch - new flywheels were not available so before I replaced it I purchased a used flywheel from a 03 liberty and it is flat and so is my 04 flywheel, Both are supposed to be curved but I don't see it ?

So far no clutch problems. I wish I had more knowledge about this.

So he made sure to keep the curve it there I'll bet
