Sure
1) If lifted
2) if you use aftermarket steel wheels like Soft 8s of course mostly only available in 4 inch backspacing
3) Stock steel / aluminum wheels will not work

Absolutely have to be lifted to run 15" wheels on the KJ? I was looking at getting some and 30x9.5 instead of getting stock sized tires when my current tires need replacing.

For that combo you must install a lift 1st.

15x7 rims(4" BS) with 235/75R15's may work on a stock suspension depending on sag with minor rubbing.

Even with lift, an aggressive 30x9.5 tire will rub on the front bumper. This is mine, after Ironman springs, before the clevis and top plate lift. Front was at 20" in the pic. I had to do a pinch weld pounding, and trim the front bumper some. Still a little rub up front at times.

15x7" and 235/75r15 will rub the pinchweld at stock sagging, and will really rub when the suspension is compressed.

Thanks, wasn't aware of all that regarding fitment. I'll probably just stick with the stock 16" wheels for now

Would a 4.5" backspace work on a steel wheel with a 31x10.5x15 with an Ironman 2.5" lift? or would you need the top plate, clevis and iso's added?

With 31s you'll need more than 2.5 inches of lift
stick to 30s , plus won't lose as much power or gas mileage
31s you're looking at regearing soon
