2005 crd

[CRD Liberty]

Good morning all, new to the forum, glad to be here.
I'm having an issue with my '05 Liberty CRD.

I noticed a knocking noise was coming from under the hood. Could not pinpoint it. Anyway, while I was driving down highway the the serp belt popped off. After I towed the Jeep home, I started the engine (without the belt) and there is no more knocking.
I tried hand turning all the pulleys and none are giving me any resistance or grinding. Any ideas where I should be looking for the knocking noise?
I'm putting the belt back on to see if the knocking returns.
I would really appreciate any feedback I can get. Thanks.

Welcome! I had a knocking sound and it turned out to be the air conditioning idler bearing going bad, but that was on gas. I am assuming it is the same for the crd.

Look at the serpentine belt tensioner after you put the belt back on to see if its' pulley is on a different angle than the others. My parts CRD had a bad tensioner that looks good as new with the belt off.

Another possibility is the alternator decoupler, look for rusty dust near the alternator pulley and check that it spins smoothly.

If you can't find anything obvious then fire it up and look for the noise.

Well I went in to install the belt tensioner, I started it up to video the before and after engine noise, now the knocking is back and its chirping. It sounds like it's coming from behind timing belt cover. Are these symptoms of timing belt replacement. Has 161k miles. Bought it used but thinking timing belt has never been replaced.

I'm not a CRD guy (maybe ask in the CRD section here or the LOST one, they have a good CRD section too), but I'd definitely get that taken care of.

Agree with HJ - there's great info over on LOSTJeeps.com in the "Love That Torque" section for the CRD's.

What I do know is that the timing belt very definitely should be replaced at 100,000 miles - along with some other components I don't remember. The CRD engine is an "interference" engine, meaning if the timing belt breaks the valves will hit the top of the pistons which basically means the engine is severely damaged. The replacement is not cheap but is better than the cost of a rebuilt engine or a new vehicle.

Every once in a while I get antsy to find a CRD and add it to the stable. Would love to take a torquey diesel off road :waytogo:

No, I've always thought one would be fun to have. I was looking at an 05 CRD a few months ago but chickened out. It was almost due for all that service and wasn't priced to sell.

100,000 Miles or six years (installed) are the limits for timing belts. Best to park it if you have noises from inside the belt cover. Can't think of anything bsck there that would cause the serpentine belt to jump off. I think you have two different problems going on. Water pumps don't last two timing belts and they'll eat the belt when they seize; That'll break most or all of the 16 rockers which probably have worn pins and need replacement anyway. Timing belt also runs the fuel pump, which doesn't usually have problems, and the viscous heater. I think I've only heard of one of them going bad. Also a couple of idler pulleys and another belt tensioner. I'm guessing water pump.

Timing belt isn't an easy task and you need some special tools. LOST is the best place for Liberty CRDs and you might like to look up Geordi who travels around doing these timing belt jobs. Not many shops or dealerships can be trusted to do the job right . There's also a list of modifications you might want to do while you're in that deep. ID Parts has a good timing belt kit as well as other CRD parts.

I got to the crank pulley, pulled it off and the plastic ring bearing was in pieces. Looks like I need to replace.
