Thanks for the compliments.

I am happy to report that everything continues to work properly. I did not overlook anything or accidentally damage anything related or otherwise. I don't see any indication of leaking gear oil around the differential cover or from the new bearing seals, though a proper inspection would require removing the rotors.

As our Liberty is getting driven, I am making a conscious effort to exercise the parking brake every time. I have noticed the parking brake lever has been creeping higher to fully engage the parking brake. If it continues, I may have to get under the vehicle and adjust them a bit tighter.

Nice job. I had the same problem last month. I decided to go with a junkyard backing plate, since the local pik-n-pull had a suitable donor.
I was kind of worried about pulling the axle, but it really didn't take that long.

Original OP here.

Just reporting in that after 3.5 years, everything continues to operate as designed with no issues surfacing or returning. All is well.

I see that our Jeep gets more undocumented miles from being towed behind our motorhome than it does with actual driving it. The odometer today, 3.5 years later, has only 95,000 miles, just 8000 more than 3.5 years ago when I did the parking brake restoration at 87,000 miles. My wife needs to drive her Liberty around town a lot more.

Aftermarket two piece so you don't have to remove the axle. DORMAN 924657.
An old thread, but thank you very much for this DORMAN 924657 reference and extensive chronological description of your exemplary repair. And which thread came up in an Internet search I found seeking to help a neighbor of mine who wants to fix a JEEP>2006>LIBERTY>3.7L V6 of his daughter (whose knee is presently in worse shape). The driver's side is missing the whole backing plate.

However, while I thank God i found your posts, a question I have re DORMAN 924657 is that while Walmart says this "looks like a good fit" for the 2006 Liberty, and it fits your Sport, yet Amazon says it does not. Both list it for $118. Ebay also says it fits (for #305)

Below are the specs for the Jeep from Amazon, which i think as from the lic. plate. I have also ran the VIN given me,

I can't comment on the Dorman part number conflicts. All I know is what I posted 4 years ago. I wish I could offer more help with that.

There were 2 different brake systems available for the rear of the KJ, one was a large drum brake like the earlier Jeep XJ, the other system is a disk brake with a small internal drum assembly inside the hub that purely serves as a hand brake.

Thanks. You have no doubt been a help to many. May God bless. I read (on this forum) that "Our 2006 Jeep Liberty CRD has 3 studs that hold the backing plates on. The 2003, 2004 & 2005 have 4 studs.I saw in a review that this backing plate didn't have the wheel speed sensor hole that started in 2006."

So maybe that is where the confusion is.

Installed 924657 on 2007 Liberty 4 years ago, don't recall having to modify anything. Axle nuts had to be replaced due to rust. Price at Rock Auto was $190 for the pair. I did scuff and undercoat them prior to installation but as far as modifiying if I did it must have been minor.
