So, I am now debating between a new sport and a local used sport. I've read on here in 2007 Jeep ditched the trans dipstick. Is the trans the same from 06 to 07? Is there a provision for the dipstick that's just got a plug in it (I am thinking could I add a 2006 dipstick onto the 2007?).

With the $4500 back on new ones, it's looking more appealing. Depends on how much I can get the used one down in price (12k mile 2006).

Any other significant changes from 06 to 07 that I should be aware of?

Thanks, you all have been more than helpful!

It's just a plug. If you buy the dipstick and remove the plug, you're set.

The '07 3.7L has electronic throttle control. I've driven an '07 and it's even more annoying on the 3.7L than it is on my 2.8L diesel. There is a VERY noticeable throttle delay. I didn't notice it however, on that Nitro that I took on a test drive, so maybe something was wrong with this particular Liberty. However, engine programming is different between the two, so who knows.

What dealerships are you going to?

Well, the used '06 is BlueWater in Port Huron. I was going to swing into Friendly on 14 and Van **** on the way home from work and see what I can get them down to on a new one. Hopefully I can use that as leverage on the used '06 or a new '07 at the dealer in Port Huron.

Port Huron is asking $17k for the used '06 Sport - 12k miles. Of course I won't spend that much. MSRP on a '07 is $24,500...they have $3,500 cash back and an additional $1,000 bonus cash, plus I can get the friends and family plan (a little discount, nothing huge - about another $1,000).

These drive by wire comments worry me a bit - My wife has an '05 Pontiac G6 and that's the drive by wire. I don't notice anything out of the ordinary (other than the monsterous lump sticking out of the TB!). I'll take an '07 for a spin tonight.

I owned an '07 Manual ****** and I returned it I hated it so much. I think it was the "electronic throttle control" that really screwed it up for me. The delay caused by the "ETC" made it impossible to get any timing perfected which you need for driving a manual transmission. It really sucked.

I traded it for an '07 Automatic ****** and it seems to be pretty good so far. There may be a slight delay when first starting off, but nothing too bad and I don't notice it at any other time.

I think you only get the additional $1,000 bonus cash if it's a Limited 4x2, otherwise it's just $3,500. Not positive, but that's what I get from Jeep.com.

I think you're right. Darn.

I think if I can get the price good enough, I'll go for the used '06.

I've had horrible experiences with their sales department (Friendly, 14/VanDyke). But I hear the service department is great!

What happened with Sales? My old man leased a '98 Cherokee there and had no real issues.

I'll be heading up to Port Huron to check out the used '06! :)

Attitudes and overpricing. My mom had to storm out of there with some name calling.

Then I went in there myself because they also had a diesel back in June of '06. Again, overpricing, but gladly no attitude this time. I could have gone a little further with the payment... I'd have rather had a blue Jeep as opposed to a silver one, but the silver one @ another dealer had an EVIC. :) And that's the one I have now!

My 07 has a good amount of throttle delay, identical to another 07 I've driven. However, I'm used to it now.

I talked to a gentleman from Friendly's parts dept -- he says the 2007 filler tube for the transmission has the same part NUMBER as the 2006, but the LETTERS at the end are different and thus indicates a different part (eg 2006 would be 12345AB and 2007 is 12345AC).

He couldn't give a clear yes/no whether or not the trans dipstick for sure interchanges or not. The filler tube on my 07 appears identical in location and size to my girlfriend's 06 liberty filler tube, for what it is worth.

The "AC" is just a updated # for the "AB",same part just updated to cover another model year.Same thing happened to me buying my LCA's,even though I had to use a updated part# the LCA's came with the old part#(casted into the LCA's).

More people from the Detroit area! We're gonna take over JKJ!

The last two letters are just revisions. AA, AB, AC, AD, AE, AF, AG...... same part, there's just something slightly different about it.

Try a throttle delay combined with a manual transmission. Not a good combination. That's why I returned the manual, took the nice depreciation loss, and got an automatic.

I don't really notice a delay on my '07, but I haven't driven an automatic in 15 years. Ignorance is bliss. I hope someone figures out how to get a transmission dipstick that they know for certain fits. I want one.

WOOT! So the dipstick is the same! Very cool to know.

Thanks for the info about the part suffix. I'm wondering if the top of the filler tube is different - threaded for the plastic dealer use only cap and that is the change requiring a different letter suffix?

Yea, a slight change in engineering calls for the letter suffix to modify. It's a way to track the littlest revision even if it doesn't actually have any noticeable changes.

At my work I deal with engineering level changes everyday. "They changed the amperage from .10 to .11" or "they changed the angle by .0125 degrees". It all accounts for a revision to the engineering level.
