2H to 4H and back...now a hot oil smell

the expert is WRONG. PART TIME means you use it "part of the time when needed" and it locks the drive train on slick or dry roads. dry will kill it if you go far enough.
FULL TIME is the one you can use on any surface wet, slick, or dry.

X2... he's thinking of an 'all wheel drive' where there is a center differential.

Xenfrog, even if you completely hosed your transfer case, I don't know or understand why you'd have a 'hot oil' smell. Especially after you switched it back...

i had to climb that same hill again yesterday (after visiting the trans shop for a check up) and the hot oil/fluid smell was back. seems it is heating up on the big climbs. definately getting a trans flush service as soon as payday arrives. so i am thinking it was a coincidence that i had used the 4WD and then later that day got the mystery smell after climbing that 9% grade.

so today i pulled the kingsbury grade to tahoe, the roads covered and chains required. unfortunately i just have the all season radials. roads were slippery, put it in 4H and wow we made it to the top of Daggett Summit :-D no trouble. (i do have chains to put on but wanted to test my "cherry bomb" Liberty out...test passed!)

You might try climbing those hills with the overdrive off. Button on the transmission shifter. The ****** will run much cooler.

Or you might just put it in low range. Just throwin that out there....
