So I was following a rocky two track in the Green Mountains in my 06 KJ. It ended on a narrow stretch at a deadfall blocking the trail. With no room to turn around I started backing out, I started to slip from a big rock so I kicked in in 4 and started creeping over it, as I crested the rock there was a loud bang. I got out and checked to see if I hit something, no scrapes, no dents, the bang was something internal. After that my 4WD light went off, when I disengaged 4WD the "part time" light came on. It drove normally the whole way home. So I jacked up all 4 tires to see if one was not spinning while in 4WD, all 4 had power. I also check to see if any of my wheels were engaged when I did not have 4WD on. I noticed that both of my rear wheels are spinning when in 2WD...
This may sound like a dumb question to some of you but is that normal?
If my Jeep has posi trac this is the first time I have been made aware of it...
Any advice would me much appreciated!

Not sure what to say about the popping noise if everything is still working properly maybe a rock jumped up and hit your undercarriage. If your part time light is on when in 2wd and off in 4wd it is the transfer case position switch and is a very common issue but a quick fix. http://www.jeepkj.com/forum/f202/how-change-t-case-position-sensor-quick-method-under-vehicle-51959/
And as for if you have a limited slip locker or anything, look on your rear axle there should be a metal sticker/stamp that will say what your rear axle has got in it! Hope that helps some.

Actually, it sounds like the driveline may have bound up as you were cresting the rock.

Were you turning the front wheels side to side and working on creeping over the rock? If so one of the wheels may have turned more or less than the other four, the driveline was under stress and it let go with a "bang." Doesn't mean anything is broken, necessarily, but it does let you know how much stress a driveline is under when all four wheels are forced to turn the same amount when the Jeep is in Part Time 4WD.

That's why we should NEVER drive a Jeep on good traction surfaces in Part Time 4WD - it can destroy the driveline. That includes driving them on wet surfaces like a rain-dampened road. If your Jeep was getting decent traction and you were turning the front wheels back and forth they were getting out of sync with the rear wheels. Don't stop wheeling it or putting it in 4WD when you need to - just be careful of the type of surface you're on.

As VAHlene said, it appears the transfer case position switch is just giving you bad readings. Easy repair. :waytogo:

Mine has made some mean bangs and pops before. It seems to get stuck in part time when coming out of full time. So lets say im on pavement in fulltime and put it in 2wd, it will stay in part time and the next turn i take it bangs!

Its done it going to 4low too. Guess it does go all the way in and when the front wheels spin or i turn it bangs again.

Havent broken anything yet. I try to be careful but sometimes it happens.

I didn't have the popping noise but mine said I was in part time when the lever was in 2wd and 2wd when i was in part time on the lever. Its not hard to get to I was told I'd have to buy a new sensor. Well I'm broke so I just took the sensor out spayed some wd40 on the part that moves(its normally in ATF+4 so wd40 won't hurt it) and pressed it in and out a few times, put it back in hooked it up and it works fine now!

Yup, heard that bang before. I was trying to get up a small bump, shifted it into 4hi, transfer didn't like it so it banged...out of 4wd(best I can tell that what the noise came from). Thereafter the transfer shifter got sticky until I drove it a bit and shifted from 2wd to 4hi and back. Ok now. Used to thunk hard after leaving snow covered road onto pavement then shifting into 2wd. Thought I was destroying the transfer case so now I shift into Neutral, shift from 4hi to 2wd, then shift into Drive. Doesn't thunk out of 4wd anymore. Not really a truly shift-on-the-fly transfer case.

Mine made a horrible bang once also. I was coming out of a very deep muddy field at my friend's place, and shifted out of 4LO. It obviously didn't like that too much. As I was driving home, it was making a real nasty metal grinding sound. I pulled over on the shoulder, threw it in 4HI then back to 2WD, and it's been fine since. Never had a problem with the shift on the fly though. Mine's always been smooth.

Did it to me lsat time I went to the fishing camp towing a friend ATV. Right on start at the gate after paying. Started climbing the hill and about 100m later it did a big bang. First reflex was to drop it on 2WD and stop don't know why. My first impression was something moved in the trailer but realised later where it came from.

So here is there really a RIGHT way of shifting into and out of 4LO? The only way I could ever really get it to go in was have it in neutral and have it in neutral to get it out again

Never had problems like these in 4WD. Even when I used to use it on wet pavement because my old tires used to scare me they slipped so much. :(
