Okay I know this is going to sound ******** but last night we were getting ready to head out and I started the car and I got brave and decided to play with the 4x4 so I pulled up on click and it said 4x4 part time. Okay went up one more click and I guess that was nuetral. Kicked it over it went to 4x4 high and tried to pull up again but couldn't get it to go higher. Thats when I got stuck. I couldn't get it to go back down to just 2wd. So I moved the shifter down and boy did it grind like hell. but it did go down.

Can someone give me the 411 on how 4x4 works and what to do or not to do?

were you in gear when you were doing all this?
You should not switch through 4x4 options while STOPPED, although it will work it is suggested that you do it while moving. If you wanted to move to 4x4 LO (the highest after you shift it to the side a little) you should put it in N first then shift, OR move 1-3 mph and switch while.

All of the details, and above have been covered numerous times, you might want to do search, but above should give you some idea.

Also Jeep has a great flash on the site.

Nope I was in Park while doing all this I thought in ANY 4x4 vehilce it was best to do while STOPPED. So do it at 1-3 MPH only in Drive I'm guessing thats atleast helpful. Sorry I didn't do a search I didn't even know how to search something like that since it's so broad LOL!

Wow, especially in park..
Actually DCx recommends that switch 4x4 options on the run. Anything under 55 for 4x4 HI and 4x2 (or 4x4 Full Time / 4x4 Part Time / 2x4 if you have selec-trac)
For Low Gear, it is normally OK to switch while stopped with ****** in Neutral. Just put it N, pull to 4x4LO and put it back to 1 or D to get out of a ditch or something.

Do no go over 10mph with 4x4LO.

Yikes so that grinding. How much Damage did I do there? :(

Also. Do you guys find that when you go down from Park to Drive or something the jeep wants to lunge forward or rather when you put it back to park It wants to really slam into park kind of? Good Tutorial on Jeeps website by the way.

I didn't have that sticker one the 4x4 mode :(.. anyway to get one?

Don't worry, not the kind of damage your KJ cannot handle.. It is built tough enough to handle that.

Yes that slamming is normal (at least so far all KJs I've seen do that) but you can get BCM flashed by the dealer, if there is any firmware update, they can get it a bit smoother.. go and tell your dealer.

What sticker on the 4x4 mode? Do you have sport or LTD? If you have no 4x4 FULL TIME, then yours is part time (4HI) not selec-trac.

It's says it's a Sport edition. So I imagine there is all of them. I don't have the sticker on top of the shifter. To indicate which postion the handle is in.

Not sure where you can get it.
Just compare the order of positions, remember N comes after 4HI

You most likely have command-trac

here i found this for your comparison

Well 4x4 Part time does light up on the dash would that say anything? Is that a sticker that goes over it or what is it?

It's really easy to see if you have Select-Trac.

Yank straight back on the shift lever while you're moving. If it says 4 FULL TIME, then you've got it, if it doesn't, then you have Command-Track. I doubt DCX made one say 4PART TIME and one say 4HI 'cause that'd be a wasted part when you could just say 4PARTTIME on all of them even if they don't have a 4FULLTIME.

Either way, if you're yank it back and have ST, then you'll see 4 FULL TIME.

Those are the transfer case shifter handles. The one on the left is Command-Trac (no full time option) and the one on the right is the Selec-Trac (with full time option). Look on your handle and see which one you have.

I believe the sticker he's referring to is one that is on the roof, behind the sun visor.....i've seen a 4x4 explanation sticker on a lot of jeeps (mainly XJ's) in that spot.

Pretty sure on my command-trac is says 4HI. But let me run out and double check.

edit: yes, mine does say 4HI. I think they made two different ones just to clarify, especially on the selec-trac system.
