Hello. I have an 02 Liberty with about 108000 miles on it. The air compressor is making some clacking noises when it is on. When it is off, everything is normal. It is only when the clutch is engaged that it makes noises. Also I have little metal shavings around the pulley. Has anyone else had this problem? Any DIY guys tackeled this problem?

I have not had this problem with my KJ, but it does sound like the clutch is worn down and is unable to clamp down and turn the compressor. You should be able to just replace the clutch, and not the whole compressor. Good info to have though, you are the 3rd person I've spoke with that has said their A/C compressor starts having the same problem around 100k.

Well if I am the one to do the work instead of taking it to the stealership, I will post pics and the progress. Might be worth it to change the whole compressor out. I have priced it out and the compressor is $110 more than the clutch for it. Has anyone changed out the compressor on their jeep?

Hardest part is getting the hoses off and getting freon back in it. Its not a bad job at all if you can turn a wrench or two.

not done it on a kj but have on a zj.
