So, I loved my off-roading trip, but I am less than enthused about the addition of pinstripes I obtained from my off-the-pavement escapades.

I was thinking all kinds of crazy ways to save the paint, and I may have come up with a halfway feasible one....

I remember when watching the Powerblock on Spike TV a few months back, they showed a Duplicolor product where you could spray paint flames, etc onto your car. With soap and water, it'd wash off.

So, what if this was sprayed onto the KJ prior to going out? Sure, it won't be crazily durable and it'd look like ****, but I'd think it'd eliminate, or at least minimize the light scratching branches.

Not sure on the price, etc of it. Just a thought on a Monday morning. If it cost $10 or $15 in paint to spray down the vehicle, I'd be willing to do it for the few times I'd go each year. It'd save a lot of time and money over trying to fix damaged OEM paint.

Branches will still scratch the paint, even with that stuff on.You'll probally scratch the paint more removing that stuff and it can damage the OEM clearcoat.By all means use it if you want, don't now why though.I have a $9000 custom paint job and wear my trail pinstrips with pride,at least it shows I use the damn thing. If you do not want any scratches or other trail damage stay on the pavement,my 2 cents.

So what if I don't want scratches and crap from staying on the pavement? Too many times stones and such fly up from the roads (since they are all under construction) and attack the vehicle. Is there an alternative to removing road scars and/or decreasing the potential of getting them?

3M makes a really thick clear tape that you can put on the most prone spots.I had to almost completely cover a few cop cruisers with the stuff to prevent scratches from handcuffs.Kinda a pain though,it's real thick and doesn't like curves and body lines,a heat gun was very handy in installation(along with alot of windex).

Exactly - I just paid a large chunk of change for the KJ. I fully support your "If you do not want any scratches or other trail damage stay on the pavement,my 2 cents." That's the arguement I am weighing out in my mind right now. Not sure how I feel about it. One one hand, it'll get beat up through years of on-road/highway use so why not have fun? On the other hand, it's got 6k miles on it, so why should I trash it prematurely?

My Prix had 130k hard miles on it, and it looked darn great for an original paint job that I really didn't maintain. That's basically what sold the car - how great it looked despite the milage. I'd like the Jeep to get trashed as little as possible, so I was trying to find a way to minimize it.

At 6k miles my KJ had $5500 worth of hail damage, wiped my new paint job with a diaper until I shortly realized that I rather wheel it so the heck with it.Don't get me wrong,I like my KJ looking good, get teazed all the time for hitting the carwash right after a trail. At least I thought ahead when I painted it to put 8 coats of clearcoat on,so now every 2 years I do a sand/buff out to remove everything to start adding them all over again.

my $.02:
IT IS A JEEP. why have it if you are not going to wheel it? the scratches are proof that you are not letting all that capability go to waste.

I understand your thought....the real reason I got a Jeep? I wanted an affordable SUV with 4 wheel drive for the winter, and some towing capacity. I didn't want an Explorer or Escape, and I certainly didn't want an Equinox or Trailblazer.

The thought of off-roading was always in my mind, and I am sure I'll continue to do so in some capacity.

I take my Jeep offroad and I do not have any scratches on it. I stay on rocks which do not grow trees. If I need to, I will cut down whatever need be with my machete that I keep with me at all times.

Screw with me and Ill cut your knee caps off. Wait, back on the paint.

Those were $8 per can but I found them on sale for $.50 and $1 at walmart when they stopped carrying them. I picked up all I could find. Ive not tried the Gray yet but the clear isnt like I thought it would be. It goes on about like a wax and does a great job protecting whatever you put it on. After a week of so(says to only leave it on for 3 days but I waited longer), I removed it with just Meguairs DC soap and a Micro Fiber towel.

A few things that I do not like about it is the fact the clear went on white. I tried my best to get a good even coat and even took it back off and tried it a few times. Still could not make it look good. Like Ive said, Ive not tried the gray yet so maybe it would look best on darker colors and the clear would look best on lighter colors.

Mudflaps help to keep down rocks and nicks on the sides. It doesnt take me 10min to take them off when I need to for offroading.

Tailgating is something alot of people will do that will get their windsheild cracked and tons of nicks on the hood. My Jeep is 4 yrs old and I do not have one nick on my hood or front bumper, although a park light did get broken when a rock came off of a Honda accord that was in the passing lane. The only time I tailgate is if someone goes UNDER the speed limit on a two lane road.
