I remember when I discovered I didn't have ABS...about a year ago, I found out it was an option (thought it was standard on a Limited) and found out that if the light didn't light up during the bulb check, you didn't have it. No light. To prove it to my self, one morning it rained, and with no one behind me, I slammed on the brakes, and I skidded around. Better find out in a controlled test than after plowing into something.

also... if you can get get all 4 tires to stop spinning... like on a sheet of ice... then the abs system can sometimes think the vehicle has stopped... and no abs action occurs... noticed this on mine last winter... thought maybe the newer stuff would work better than my older abs equipped vehicles... but... nope!

I've never driven offroad with ABS but I've heard it can be a problem so for those of us without ABS, EPS and what ever other letters acronyms that the vehicle manufacturers can think of, we should consider ourselves lucky.

As for testing your vehicle's braking capabilities; I have a couple of concerns.

#1 don't ever do it on a highway; guardrails, telephone poles, the ditch & parked cars are unforgiving

#2 anything not tied down will fly forward and hit you in the back of your head or simply fly out a window

#3 snug up your seat belt and warn the passengers (or the dog :D)

Of course all of this is common sense and we all drive with common sense don't we?
