2002 3.7 not sure of the mileage. No leaks and no smoke from exhaust. I'm guessing I just lost at least 2 quarts in 700 miles after a fresh oil change!!!! Just pulled the PCV & lines and there seems to be fresh oil in them but they were not clogged and the valve rattles. I will be replacing the valve but is it even possible that a stuck PCV valve could cause that much oil loss?????

Coolant looks fine and there doesn't seem to be any coolant in the oil. Runs a very tiny bit rough but not many would notice it. Anything else I should be looking at?

welcome to the club.
I think you're probably not seeing it burn oil while driving it.
On occasion when my wife picks me up w/ the KJ I can smell a slight burnt oil.

PCV are cheap enough to replace on a regular basis.

I was consuming quite a bit of oil. Run a little atf in the oil a few days before the oil change or just put it in there and run it for a half hour or so and change the oil. Helped me out a little.

That too you need to find the right weight for the summer time and usually 5w30 is good for winter.

Well, it looks to me as if the PCV valve is shot. After cleaning it, I noticed that I could blow air through it from both sides which I assume is not good. Even when I did get the ball to seal lots of air was still getting through. Gonna install the new one and monitor oil consumption. Like others have said, just because it rattles doesn't mean it's good.

It ended up taking about 1 1/2 quarts of oil just to get it back up to the first hash mark. Thanks for the responses!!!

Oil leak

Check the oil filter for leaks. I changed the oil on my 3.7 and the Mopar oil filter developed a leak after about 50 miles. Had to replace the new filter to stop the leak. I found it by the puddle under the engine. I originally thought the oil pressure sender and then the front differential, but no. It was the oil filter. Since this started just after a fresh oil change on your engine, might be your problem.

the oil pressure sender would be another item to look at.

Also apparently the engine is also prone to leak at the rear passenger side valve cover.

If there is some kind of external oil leak like a valve cover gasket or oil sending unit wouldn't it be hitting the ground when parked????? I don't think any oil is dripping on the exhaust system.

no it will hit the cat on the passenger side and burn off ... if it is leaking for a tiny bit after the engine is stopped it lands right on the sub frame you woul dnever see it on the ground.

I have the same problem. Just turned 150K miles. No leaks, no smoke. Yet she drinks oil pretty fast. I drive about 150 miles a week to work. So I'm getting about 300 miles to the quart of oil. I just buy a gallon, and keep it in the Jeep, and check it often!
Also, only getting about 12 miles to the gallon of gas. I've already put so much money into her, I can't afford any more repairs... I guess I'll just drive her into the ground!

If the electronic aspect fails yes but if it just leaks I don't think it would turn on the check engine light.

Mine is still guzzling oil at a good clip. Nice thing is, I don't ever have to do oil changes!!!:) I just need to change the oil filter once in a while.

Not sure of the mileage? Could mean high mileage and unsure of the previous owners maintenance?
2 Quarts in 700 miles is quite a bit.
An inspection on a lift with a good flashlight, should tell you if the motor is leaking anywhere.
If it is not leaking, which generally is not the case on higher mileage engines, without replacing the valve cover gaskets for starters, means it is burning oil.
A compression test with readings of 170psi-225psi with no more then 25% difference could be performed.
Also pulling valve covers, to see how clean it is in there, & replacing gaskets, wouldn't hurt if you are unsure of maintenance & mileage.
Is the engine & valve train quiet? No rattles etc?
Moving to a bit thicker oil if it is burning, would probably help,or adding a blue bottle of STP oil treatment could bring the oil consumption down nicely.
And Edit, Looking at the Spark Plug color etc & comparing it to a spark plug condition chart, can tell you a lot about the engine.
