I came across the 550 model rectangular driving lights, they also had the fog lights, at a local Advance Auto Parts today. About the same price as a pair of Hella 500FF's so i was debating what i should go with.

This won't be for the front bumper, this will be for a custom lightbar that i am building to go across the roof rails. I was thinking the 550's might be less wind resistance than the big round 500FF's. But i want to hear if anyone has used them, if they have good light output, etc..

They are 55w lamps the same as the 500's. I tried to look up the specs of them online to compare to the 500's but got a 404 error on the info on the Hella website.

Hella 550 Driving/Fog lights.

Here is a link.
http://www.myhellalights.com/index.html

On my old 1975 Mini I had one pair of Hella 550
Driving Lights and one pair of Hella 550 Fog Lamps.
The fog lamps should always be mounted below the hight of the headlamps.
The clear 550 fog light Lens work really well as cornering/peripheral lighting.
Run 100 watt bulbs in these, and the performance is even better.
The clear 550 Driving lights with 100 watt bulbs fitted put out a considerable amount of light despite being rectangular.

I liked them.

Cheers

Thanks for the info!

That's the page that wouldn't load yesterday, seems to be working today. The local Advance Auto Parts has the 500's for $50, 500FF's for $65, and the 550's for $70.

And to think that one pair of Hella 500's now sells for $189.00 a pair here!
Walmart across the line in the U.S. sell the exact same lights for $47.88 per pair. You can almost buy four pair for that price. We get burned here very often.

Guess i should start buying them and reselling to Canadians then!! LOL

I also saw that they had FF200's, similar in size to the 500's, not sure how good they are or what kind of light output they have, will have to look at them now that the Hella website is working again.

I just threw on the round 500ff's on and they are pretty good as far as illuminating, plus they are 65 at wal-mart. At least you could get them right away; also they come with the stone shields!

I got a pair of 500FF's off eBay for $45, new in the box. Watching for another pair, otherwise i will have to get a pair from Wal-Mart too, but it would be nice to save some money on the second set!

Once i get that first pair i will sit down and start building the lightbar and just add the other two when i get them, its going to take some fabrication time on the workbench to get what i want.
