So I've been wondering about having the underside of the Jeep oiled...not undercoated...to slow down some of the rust down there. My grandparents have always had it done to their vehicles and they've got some darn old cars and trucks that still look great, and they claim it's because they had them oiled once or twice a year. What are everyone's thoughts on this? Is it worth the $100 to get it done?

I've contemplated the same idea. It would help prevent premature rusting of the underside of your vehicle but unless they do the inside of the body & door panels it wouldn't be a complete job.

I once had grease & graphite done on a car I owned, great for rust prevention but what a mess to work on.

The genuine rust proofing is only good if you have it done from "day one" of owning your vehicle, at least that's what I've read.

Hi KJ zGal

I hate rusted steel so Yes, have it done before it's too late, but beware, unproper oil may end up ruining rubber parts ( I guess
You already knew that ) and normally it does not stop corrosion, maybe only slows it down.
First wash and clean (or have it done) her thoroughly, to remove dust and mud ( I didn't say OR :D ).Personally I do creep
underneath and clean all parts I can reach by hand. Then I apply a protective lubricant meant for marine use, as it's cheap
( at least here ) and does not to alter or damage rubber parts. I almost empty the whole can each time...
Does it help ? Well, I live in a coastal area, in a ' salty ' environment and my KJ looks pristine underneath...
100 bucks, no idea, having it done here is priced about 20-25 and by doing that myself (diyman:)) it only costs me 3.

I got my Jeep rust proofed aka "oiled" last September and I did it again yesterday. The place I go to has this special oil that not only penetrates but it sticks so no dripping. They also drill holes into the doors and rocker panels and shoot oil in there to prevent rusting from the inside.

It does wonders. My dad has been going to that place twice a year since he bought his Durango in 2000 and it still looks new today. It's so worth the 100$.

Hmmm..twice a year ....is that 50 or $100 a pop?
There are undercoating specialists that can clean and prep and apply permanent one time quality undercoatings that last many years and can be touched up for free as needed.
I had mine done with a dry type metallic undercoating when it was like new, and it's done now.
No need to oil with a mess, smell etc.
Salt road conditions means pay attention to your door panels and wash them by hand every time you get back home. A car wash is also your friend when it is possible, through winter, with an under body spray as well.
The best time to do a permanent undercoating is in summer, when it will be dry for a few weeks.

I know a guy in Toronto, oils his Astro 502 BB about 3 times per year due to winter corrosion. I think he just uses a garden sprayer with some used motor oil.

Somewhere between being sane and insane!
Undercoating will run about $120-$????,depends on the place.I know in SD every new vehicle sold must be undercoated before it leaves the lot, costs the customer $120.My KJ is undercoated and rust free.

I'd watch that oiling, get it on the wrong spot and your Kj will go up in flames and/or not stop.Plus the next person that works on your vehicle will hate you. There's a guy that I worked on his '01 Tahoe that oiled it,well I had to replace the t-case and most of it was washed off and he was charged for the clean up of it since I don't enjoy getting that crap all over me working on your vehicle which I will track into your interior if your a ass about it.

Oil all over is a nightmare to work on. Our liberty had Black ruberized undercoating from day one and even it makes it very difficult to work on.

I agree with car washes. In the winter I go once a week. Unfortunately my wife drives the liberty and chooses not to go to the carwash so it now has some rust spots. All rust is very hard to avoid unless you live in the desert.

Not true unfortunately :(

I'm sure it isn't as bad as some places though :p

well yeah I forgot, if you get water inside and it soaks the floor and sits under the carpet you may rust your floorboards :D

I live in Canada the home of Salt and Rust. I have never had my 04 Undercoated and it has absolutely no rust except on the brand new Ranchos oddly enough.
