Would appreciate any recommendations. I currently have an Exide battery, size 34X, just 2 yrs old. Left it disconnected for 3 months while I was working on the vehicle, and it was totally dead. Maybe this is normal? Still, just wondering if anyone has had better experience with a battery which can handle cold weather (Chicago area, so -20F isn’t unusual)

Best most powerful Battery for your Jeep will be an AGM (absorb glass mat) style of battery.
Excellent in Cold Weather!
The #1 best fully sealed AGM battery is expensive, virgin lead, no catastrophic failures, and lasts 10+ years.
Odyssey Shelf life 2 years, without need for charging. Top & Side posts.
I run a Odyssey PC-1500 34/78 under the hood of my Jeep. 9 years old now. New on Midtronics load test is over 1000CCA.

you get what you pay for.

Here, $100 battery's with a 3 or 5 year warranty almost never make it past 2 years. Sure you get some warranty to cover cost of a new one, but who wants to deal with the hassle?

The heat kills batteries because even though most are "sealed" now they are only sealed when it comes to putting water back in, they still vent some gases out and this leads to drying up in the summers.

I have never heard of a battery here in Arizona lasting that long. Do those batteries hold up to the heat we see here in the southwest? If they do, when my current battery dies I may just look in this direction. Do the stock alternators charge these ok? Some of the stuff I was just reading online about them mentioned needing a charger to keep them charged because the stock alternators don’t provide enough power.

The OEM Denso Alternator charges the system well.
The Odyssey batteries are the best & most powerful virgin lead AGM period.
They are used in commercial applications, fire trucks, police, ambulance etc and truly are the extreme battery.
Feel free to contact Odyssey and inquire about the Arizona heat, and how the battery will perform.
Nothing else will out perform an Odyssey. I use the model 34/78- PC-1500DT. (dual terminal) New Tested at 1319 CCA !
Buy the Best...& It won't die like the rest ! :)

They seem to like the heat.
Last summer I tested by having headlights left on for 30 minutes.
Then watch the battery recover it's voltage !!
30 minutes with lights off, it recovered to 12.5 volts!
