We just recently went on a trip to see my dad and I made it a point to try to get the best mileage that I could. When the gas light came on, I stopped and filled up, and I had 456 miles on that tank, it took 19 gallons to fill it back up....that comes to 24 mpg! I had done this before when I took the same trip, but thought maybe I got lucky...guess not. I was really impressed with the mileage these things get. For comparison's sake, my wife's '02 Accord 4-cyl averages about 23-27 mpg whether it's city or highway. Most of my driving is around town, and I average 17-18 every time I figure it up. Just thought it was pretty cool. :D

Been there, done that on my old Liberty. I remember a lot of people saying that I was full of.. (censored).

It *is* possible.

Of course it is possible. People with a lead foot may not be able to pull it off, but if you know how to drive you can certainly get good mileage out of these on extended trips, even loaded down with luggage and people. I pulled 22.7 MPG to and from Chicago on Memorial Day when I was driving - at upwards of 90 MPH the whole time, 16.5 when my fiancee did...at roughly the same speeds, probably closer to 80 since her only driving was during the day when I-65 was crowded. She doesn't know how to drive and her gas mileage shows it. Needless to say, I drove more than 75% of the time after that. I always wondered how I could be pulling down 24 MPG in a 5.7L HEMI V8 while she got paltry numbers like 15 MPG in the Liberty. Now that I have taken a long trip in it and traded off driving, I see why.

That's awesome! So it can be done ;)

BTW, how many more miles can you get when the gas light comes on? Just wondering.. maybe I'll be dangerous and drive as much as I can before I run out of gas

I was going to say no way but your kj is 2wd. ;) Best I've gotten was like 330 out of a tank from nj to va last summer. Before the lift and tires though.

wtf??? does my 02' have a smaller tank or something. I've filled up several times with 16.3 gallons with my EVIC reading 3 miles left till empty.

Good day,
We regularly get 23-26 miles per gallon on a longish drive.
Like Marlon said about people thinking he's full of it. I got the same responce! And like The Titan said, "If you know how to drive..."
Man are people that ******** that they can't pull it off?

Eh, I forgot his was a 4x2. That would kinda explain what was going on here. He'll probably regularly get tanks like that, while us 4x4 folks only get them once every 2-4 centuries. :p

'02-'03=18.5 gallon tank,'04=19.5 gallon tank, and '05 and above have 20.5 gallon tanks.By the way you should not go under a 1/4 tank of gas since the electric fuel pump is cooled by being sumerged in gas and under a 1/4 it is no longer sumerged in gas. This can lead to early pump failure.

yeah, that's probably the only thing that is good about not having 4wd! When I filled up it took 19 gallons, so if I've got a 20.5 gallon tank that means I could have theoretically gone about 36 more miles before having to get out and push. I don't think I wanna do that.....nervous.gif

oh
most vehicles will have reserve tank/precautionary lights to cause you to fill up. i would bet most will always fill up with roughly 16 gallons, even though most of these have between 18-20 gallon tanks. the 2 or 3 spare gallons are considered reserve...i.e. emergency, dont burn it all, not good for your pump, specially if you are going to be stopping and then starting back up, but on highway it could be ok since you will stop and immediately refuel.

i get consistent 19-20 mpg with my ride on highway, and depending on my foot, 15-16 mpg in the city.

i really dont get that bad of gas mileage, obviously if i wanted good gas mileage, i would have bought a honda or something.

I got just under 22mpg on my way to school today. That's with a lift, tires, skids and my new DrawTite hitch on there. Nearly all freeway driving, with about 12 miles of 0-30-0mph traffic in the construction zones.

We don't have a flat highway, so cannot comment.. :) Potholes, cheap quality nyc gas, angry flooring, sudden stops, quick turns all work against me.

South of here is flat highway. North is all mountains.

You do have flat highway. Try the LIE and head for the Hamptons - but at 2am and then you will be able to set your cruise control. Otherwise you're driving on a really long parking lot.

That's what I am talking about.. Yes they are "flat".. otherwise in this area, there is no way you are getting anything even close to "highway" mileage on that sticker.. Here, even highway is city.. so you are lucky if you drive more than 5-10 miles without running into a jam..LIE is ok after exit 50.

Yea, it's not too bad once you pass Huntington it starts to "open up".

Ive never gotten over 350miles to a tank although Ive never gotten more than 17 gal in it. I ran it down till the guage was pegged on E then ran it 25more miles(evic said 0miles left for along time). I was sick of not getting more than 15gal in it and I still only got 17gal in it. I have the 19.5gal tank..

Best I get around here is 20-21mpg. I can see 24mpg if I drive like a granny on a country road and have O/D off.

I can never get over 21mpg with all the down shifting it must do in the mountains around here..

Edit: Ive never gotten better than 18mpg in the Hemi.. Thats being as easy as I can be on the throttle too, which is crazy hard in that thing. You will be doing 80mph before you know it..

I recently got 20.9 city when driving around here. It was mostly night time driving so I didn't have anyone riding my ass, so I could accelerate nice and slow.
