Broken OME 927

Got in the Jeep yesterday morning and heard a snap. Has this happened to anyone or did my "luck" strike again? :happy175:

Needless to say I am quite thrilled at the moment.... :emotions34:

Lift kit is only 5 years old. Less than 40,000 miles on it. And yes, I wash the salt off of them. These springs rusted within the first year of owning them.

Never seen any OMEs look like that after 100,000 miles
But like anything else things do wear out and things break.
Just like the new 2018 JK that they were testing and broke down along the road .
Will need to replace both of course to maintain height, so while bad another 170 bucks and back on the road again

Holy corrosion batman!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My rotors had next to no corrosion on them when my KJ sat for a entire year.In your pic that is like you never washed it and submerged it in salt water for a couple of years.

That's what is sad. I take care of my vehicles and the rotors I have on it currently are spotless after 2+ years. This vehicle sits outside and I was appalled with how fast these springs rusted. My oem springs had no rust on them when I removed them!

Already got a pair ordered. Supposed to come tomorrow. I sure hope the black coating holds up better on the new pair.

Maybe spray them with some epoxy clear coat or epoxy black... just in case.

Looking at the rust on your knuckle, clevis, cv joint housings.... that's odd. It's almost like the environment where you park or drive is attacking your Jeep.

Everything has been like that since I got the jeep back in 2010 with 50,000 miles. The factory springs were rust free and are still sitting in my garage. The knuckle, cv housing, etc. haven't changed in the last 7 years.

There has been a couple of Northeast Ohio KJs that were that bad that we've lifted at my place. But maybe I'm crazy but I wash good, wax the UCAs , spray the coilovers with a rust preventative spray, everything else gets painted 2-3 times a years
But thats looks bad for sure:gr_grin:

That's surface rust. Looks like a normal older New England Jeep. My 02 from NY looked even worse with only 11,700 miles on it.

Not trying to start anything, but I didn't think OME ever broke from what I read on this forum.

And now that I think of it, one of my springs had a slight bubble under the coating when I first installed the lift. It later broke the coating and started rusting there. I wonder if it was a defect in the metal? I'll have to check it out to see if it was the same spring.

Yes sure do plus some other parts underneath couple of times a year, protects them, plus looks good If I don't wax it, coat it it gets painted .

Well, got everything swapped over. Both springs were broken. The driver's side was broke in 2 places, the passenger side in 1. I'm just hoping my rear coils hold up now...... :happy175:

Thing I was surprised about is that the coil wasn't rusted all the way through and it still broke. I was also intrigued about the 2 pieces that came off the 1 coil are almost identical in size and where they broke.

Almost makes you think something went wrong with the manufacture of those specific springs...

Yeah, just wanted to point out that those 2 identical coils came off the same spring. There are 3 total pieces which are pictured with the coil they came off of.
