Well, I started at 4pm and just now finished, well its in and looks good. I just want to put in some straps and a fire extinguisher , it could use at least one light under it. I'll put up some pictures tomorrow or maybe later if I get chance.

Oh, I forgot..

1/2in birch plywood 3/4 X 1.25 in pine rails

Indoor outdoor carpet from Lowes

dowel rod 7/8 X4ft

spray adhesive, hairdryer and putty knives

I used the hair dryer to heat the carpet to make it form better to the angles. Putting the carpet on was the hardest.. Everything else took less than 1/2 hour.. I do have a full wood shop in the garage!

I recycled everything except for the carpet and glue..IOW..all the materials came from around the house so all this cost me today was the 18.00 for the carpet and I have more then half that left over.

I didn't fasten it to them, with the back seats locked in and the 7/8 dowel rod in the slots it holds firm. If I do happen to have any issues I will probably use a velcro strap to hold it.
Getting the carpet around the corners took some doin, I used a hair dryer to heat the carpet and mold it around the corners. I don't plan on using the shelf for anything heavy. I will put some strap system on the top, I have been looking at battery hold down straps at Tractor supply. All that is, is a 1 3/4 nylon web strap with two plastic brackets that screw to the shelf, then you slide the webbing through and it has a buckle on it. Either that or I drill a series of holes and thread 1/4 bungee cord like lacing a shoe.

Your shelf looks good.:) I built one similar but in the front I had to put small L brackets into where the seat latches. Wouldn't stay any other way.

Try moving your dowel rod forward, causing rearward pressure thus holding the shelf against the seat backs. Are you the one that posted the dimensions

with the drawing? If so, I have you to thank.. I went by those measurement...

Definitely looks good - functional & provides security for anything stored below

Nice job ... Hope you don't mind if I "steal" your creative thoughts LOL

How did you make the upper lip part? Did you just use the dowel rods and cut them at 45 degrees at corners, for the whole perimeter? How did you fasten? I used conduit brackets when I made my first cargo shelf. I might go the drilling route this time.

I cut out the birch plywood to fit (measurements found on this board)

Then I cut out 7/8 X 1 1/14 pine shelving board (I ripped them on my TS), then I just cut them to length and laid them out along the perimeter. Once I had them all cut out I glued and air nailed them to the ply from underneath. Of course I was clamping them until they were nailed. After they dried or close enough for me, I laid out the carpet and went to work with the hair dryer and spray adhesive. I did have to staple in the corners and along the front rail, but I hid the staples along the inside edge. If you look VERY CLOSELY you can see staples.I did cut a 45 degree where the shelf meets the seatback.
THEN I put the shelf in and put the flattened 7/8 dowel rod where I wanted it, just tight enough to hold the shelf against the seatbacks.
