Burning Smell

I just had my rear brakes (pads and rotors) replaced at the dealer (44,000 miles on my Liberty CRD). When I got home, I noticed a distinct burning smell coming from the rear wheels.

Is this the new brakes "breaking" in, or is there a problem.

You shouldn't be smelling anything.

What was the reason you had the pads replaced? Were they just worn out, or did they smell?

Rear calipers are known to stick.

The pads were at less than 10%, and the rotors would be less than spec if turned, according to the dealer.

It must be that the calipers are sticking.

If you just litterly had them replaced and then drove home and saw them smoking I would say you have nothing to worry about.Brand new brakes will smoke a little if they happen to not be 100% washed properly before install,most likely just anti-corrosion or brake cleaner burning off.It also depends on how you drive,if you are ******* brand new brakes without letting them break in a little first they can also smoke for a bit.


Now if they keep on smoking I'd say there is a problem then.

Could be your emergency brakes inside the rear disk drum set up. I had my rears done and the e-brake was a pain in the a** The e brake pads may be rubbing or not adjusted right.

Isn't that early for rear brakes? What about the front?

i have replaced many sets of calipers just after replacing rear pads and rotors on kj's for this very reason, look for the rotors turning different shades of blue and purple and smoking like crazy, then go back to the dealer and tell them to eat it. thats what our customers do to us. so we recommend them every rear brake job. or atleast give customers the option to cover our ****.

Just got back from the dealer.

They replaced the left rear caliper. $201.48 bill. Parts were $84.56, labor was $127.50. They took 10% off the parts and 20% off the labor.

My normal Jeep dealer went out of business, so this was the first time I tried this "new" dealer.

$84 is about right for the part. I think I bought one from Napa for ~$70 or so and of course I didnt pay myself to put it on.
