I too have wondered why they decided to pressurize the overflow tank rather than keep it like the majority of other vehicles. More so since I believe they went back to having the cap on the radiator in 07 (I think).

And yes, the extra portion of the tank is most likely for environmental reasons, keeps antifreeze from just pouring on the ground. If any gets over there, it will get sucked back in once the Jeep cools off. My 98 ZJ just has a hose going to the fender well and lets it pour on the ground if it overflows. My 94 ZJ just lets it dribble out in the engine bay.

I would think if you had an actual overheat condition (boiling the engine coolant) it would be collected in the “clean” chamber instead of being released to atmosphere. Then when your vehicle cools down, it is self added back to the cooling system.

actually, i would think that because the "dirty side" of the tank is directly connected to the cooling system, any coolant expansion including boil over would just be directed to that as it would be the path of least resistance.

And it does, have seen it before
not mine but a pretty young lady along the road :(
She asked boyfriend to check it and he didn't , ran without much antifreeze/ anything destroyed the motor
But yes coolant what there was went into, what you are calling the dirty side , just like it is designed to do
very simple and efficient design and works well

They probably put the reservoir tank up high and kept it on the pressurized side of the system to allow it to self bleed the air out of the system.
Think they were trying to think outside of the box when they designed it and was hoping this idea would be a marvel innovation.
Has anyone seen this design elsewhere in the industry.

well, last night i took the hose (that goes from the rad to the tank) off from the radiator and poured antifreeze into the tank. it goes into the "dirty" side of the tank. so i really have no idea why the "clean" side of the tank is even there.

There is a hose that goes from the radiator cap to the clean side. Like I said, the only time vapor can go to the clean side is when the system has over 16psi on it and the radiator cap opens.

I suspect the only reason that small hose you took off is there is to let air out of the radiator.

well, on my coolant tank there is a large hose on the bottom of the tank, and a small hose on the top that goes to the top of the radiator. there is no hose that goes to the clean side. nor is there a fitting for a hose.

Maybe thats why youre confused, sounds like someone has removed that hose for whatever reason. You can see it on bigals pic.

Why don't you unbolt your tank and pull it out.
that way you see everything.

I HAVE had it off, i tried to clean the tank insides using radiator cleaner, Dawn dish soap, and hot water. there really isn't much of anything to see under there.

35 posts on an item I look at, see where coolant level is and go on to more important things
like checking lower ball joints and from reading posts on Fakebook, no one does until they wear out:)

You would have seen a nipple that the hose you're missing connects too from another nipple by the radiator cap.
