Hello, I took my 2007 Jeep Liberty (KJ) CRD to the dealer. The number one glow plug had failed and I was told that all the plugs would have to be replaced because of an updated design along with a new relay and computer software update. They quoted me $1500 and I said OK because I wanted the job done right. WHEN THEY TRIED TO TAKE THE FIRST PLUG OUT THE CERAMIC TIP SNAPPED OFF IN THE HEAD and know they want $6500 for an new head!

Has anyone ever run into this. I tried running the engine with the plug out for a few hours but the tip won't budge and is impossible to gain access to. AANY IDEAS OR SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE WELCOME.

Yeah, tell them they break it, they fix it. You went in there without any broken spark plugs, and you expect to leave with new plugs installed as quoted. "Oops we screwed up and broke your car and it's going to cost you $6,500 to fix" doesn't fly.

They broke it they fix it. Always been that way. I've had to pay for whatever I broke when doing R&R work for the radiator shop.

Well 1st no 2007 CRD's in the USA,'05 and '06's only for North America.

2nd when glow plugs go bad they tend to swell at the very ends which almost always results in the ends breaking off into the combustion chamber. That is the nature of owning a diesel and yes it's not the techs fault since it's a common failure for glowplugs. The head does not need to be replaced but it does need to come off to get the broken piece out, good time to do the timing belt/water pump since that has to come off also with a head pull.

Since you ran the engine with the plug out you may need a new head by now when the old one could have been salvaged so it's really your fault now for making it worse. When I was in the Military I we had the same issues with the 6.2/6.5 GM diesels doing the same thing, swelled glow plug ends.GM's answer was thread the glow plug in 1 thread, unplug glowplug controller and fuel solenoid, and then crank engine to blow the glowplug out of the head.Granted it has cast iron heads so a no-no to try on a aluminum head.

tjkj2002... my bad it's an '06.

I would agree the shop does not take responsibility for the glow plug being stuck in the head and with the ceramic type plug it is a common issue. That is why they have switched to metal now.

In regards to the head being junk because it was run with the plug out... I am not sure what reason you have for that? It's a common practice to try and run the engine with the plug out in hopes the tip will come out (especially in older Mercedes). Anyway that didn't work.

I might try pushing the tip through and seeing if I can get the pieces out by taking the injector out. Does anyone know what the pre chamber looks like and if someone has had the head off and taken pictures?

The CRD is in no way similar to any Mercedes engines besides running the same fuel. What works for one does not mean it will work for the other.

The CRD's head is super fragile and easily damaged.
