So I was driving yesterday and heard a strange sound from the front left tire area that I attributed to a bad wheel bearing. I took it to a meachanic. Not my usual one. They told me the cv axle popped out of the front diff. I still have the wah wah sound that varies with speed. It starts at about 28 mph. And at about 35 the Jeep is shaking violently and that wah wah noise is really loud and almost a thumping sound. I'm about ready to run this damn thing off a bridge.

No need to swear ,
but How in the world did he think the CV "popped out " of the front diff ? No way for it to unless the whole CV broke apart. I need pictures !
I would get a second opinion on this

They said the cv popped out and they just shoved it back in. isn't there a half shaft on the passenger side? If so then that is what popped out. Isn't there some sort of clip that holds the cv in place usually?

There's an intermediate shaft on the right side between the CV half shaft and the diff. Pretty sure it should have a C-clip on both ends. If it is worn badly they may not hold.

a bad CV is nothing to get really upset about. Change the parts and it should be good for at least another 100k miles.

if you cant change out the parts yourself, find someone not so greedy to do it.

Good Luck!

Passenger side yes there is a CV, then intermediate shaft
BUT for them to come apart its had to been bad for a long time
I've seen them worn out and knocking like crazy but still together
OH and if replacing use only NAPA remanned don't go to any of the Auto zon** etc they are too short

I just called them and it popped out at the diff on the passenger side. So it is where the half shaft connects to the diff. He said there is a c clip that holds it in place and everything looked good. Something isnt right here. Do I just replace the whole axle from the cv to the diff? And yes it will be going to a totally different mechanic next.

I just crawled underneath (I was at my kids bowling tournament). The whole cv on the passenger side just flops around. I can't post pics or video but that is the issue. I only drove it 1/2 mile home and it popped out again. Would that be the intermediate shaft or should I order that and the cv?

If the shaft parts are all the same age/millage change it all out if you can reason the extra cost of it.

*** but if you take it all apart and it just needs a new c clip & a boot ... clean it re lube and go

Can anybody post a link to all the parts or part numbers I need. This is why I love this forum. Everybody is willing to help. I hope that someday I can return the favor but with the amount of knowledge you guys all have I'm not sure I'll be any help.

If replacing the CV its always recommended to replace the intermediate shaft as well. PLUS if its that bad I would replace the bearing/seal as well.
Can't believe its popping out, seen some really bad ones but not that bad
for the CV just go to NAPA and get a remanned one for your KJ, ( difference between gas and CRD )
Intermediate shaft, 4wheelparts.com did have them for 86-87 bucks Dana 30 KJ front Inner Mid Shaft ( is what they are calling it) Not sure if anyone has found one cheaper
Bearing/Seal go to Mopar

Well I ordered the reman from NAPA. $63 and a $126 core charge. Crazy. Now I just have to order the other stuff. I found the half shaft, bearing and seal on 4wheelparts.com. Anything else I need? Oh and I'll get the new clips as well.

Clips should be on the Intermediate shaft
Core charge LOL, I have at least 10-12 right side and 5 or 6 left side ones laying around . I keep trying to trade in 3 or 4 at a time :happy175: Never have to worry about having a core.
