Wow, I just called a local Midas store and asked him how much a '02 liberty would cost for both front and rear pads. He quoted me 160 bucks including labor.

Did you guys take your KJ to the dealer?

yep, stealership...

Did that include new rotors?

I can't see how it could cost $600 to replace pads. I'll do it myself.

If you guys don't speak up to the dealership and the BBB, this will continue for all of us.

Remember what happened to Sears and Diehard batteries? National TV news exposure on the scam they were pulling off. Selling used batteries as brand new ones (full price).

Time to speak out everyone. Don't let them continue to rip us off.

From now on, if they tell you that you need new brakes, ask them to take you to your vehicle, remove the tires, show you your pads, show you new ones, and compare together. I'll bet that makes them take a step back.

Thats why I do my own brakes. Always have and always will. I don't really have a lot of trust in stealerships and some other places when it comes to things as important as brakes. Don't want to end up like that guy in the "Hill Descent Gone Wrong" thread..... (rotflmao)

Not that i'd be driving down a rock in what appears to be Arizona any time soon or anything....but ya never know! \:D/

"I was on my way to work, going the normal route, and out of no where I heard this voice saying "tim, come drive on me. Come drive on me Tim....you know you want to!" Well one thing led to another, and I ended up driving to Arizona and going rock climbing in the jeep!"

LOL....atleast i'll know my brakes work good....LOL

Yeah, it was the works, and I complained too, they lost their five star status, but don't know if it has anything to do with me or not :-k

Autozone prices:
FRONT
BRAKE PAD/SHOE - FRONT $39.99 (pair)
BRAKE ROTOR - FRONT $22.99 (ea)

So, to replace pads/rotors for the front, it would be $85.97 + tax.

I have mentioned it before but I tell it again.

I have had Firestone try to rip me off twice (2 different locations in different states).

1. I had a Toyota pickup - it was overheating as I drove from Miss to Ohio. I had to keep the heater on the whole way to keep it from blowing up. Firestone said I needed a new water pump and the guy showed me the fan blades and wiggled it saying it shouldn't do that. I didn't trust him so I talked to a friend (rebuilt a `68 camaro) and he said it was just the thermostat. I bought one and we replaced the old one...fixed the problem and I went on to drive another 30,000 miles before I smashed the front end and had to replace the busted water pump and O ring.

2. I took my same Toyota pickup in for a brake check and they aid they had to replace EVERYTHING! I mean EVERYTHING related to the brakes system ( I had 185,000 miles on the toy by this time and only replaced the pads once before). Cost would be $600. I had a friend look at it and he said BS! Just the rotors and pads/drums needed changing. I bought the rotors and pads and drums and replaced it myself (not fun...busted the bolts off the wheels due to rust and excessive torque (wonder if they did that) so I had to replace those parts. (cost was under $120). I drove the pickup until it had 211,000 miles on it.

My miles were almost all open highway so brakes survived a long time.

I will never trust Firestone ever again. I would hate to have to never trust a Jeep Dealership but I will never ever let them take me for a fool. I want to see what they mean when something needs to be done on my vehicle and then I'll go get an unbiased opinion before I decide.

Here's one to add to your "Firestone...never again" file.
Took my 1997 neon into a Firestone dealer for the usual oil change. These were the same guys that had done quite a few mods to my ride without hassle, we had that thing doing 14.8 in the 1/4 (normally aspirated) with a computer, intake and lightened crank pulley. She still had a LOT left untouched and would've easily been low 14's with a few more mods. Unbeknownst to me this time they throw the "new guy" on my car and he forgets to refill the oil. I drive away and proceed to trash the crank and block. $3k later I got them replaced (elsewhere) but the car's been "difficult" ever since. With the noise it's been making for the past year, I think I might have a crank bearing going (or gone likely). I'm just going to make it last until it totally falls apart, probably into 2006, then I might pick up an SRT-4 (if they're still making them).
I can understand the fact that mistakes are made and I got the bad end of the deal. Where it gets me is this "new guy" missed the same thing on two cars within days (I was the second). I know someone else who takes their car there and is "tight" with management so he let me know what was going on "behind closed doors" so to speak. Apparently the first guy complained and although they admitted (to themselves and my friend) that it was likely their fault, they told the guy "you'll never prove it didn't leak out or that your car burned the oil, so we're not paying for the repair". Needless I got the engine replaced at the Chrysler dealer, they we're the only other mechanics I knew at the time, and since then we've gotten along great (shorty after that I found a private mechanic that does phenomenal work and much cheaper)

Moral: Firestone.. never again! Not tires or mechanics!

Sorry for the long post, but I always see red when I hear of "rip-off" stories like this. As humans, why do we do this to one another? The easy thing to do in my circumstance would have been for the shop to fall back on their insurance, that's why it's there. But Noooooo, they have to stick it to you every time.

Some story! I can't imagine them telling you that you can't prove that it was them. What bull.

When I spent a couple years in San Diego, by wife had a Dakota at the time. I'll never forget having a mechanic at Sears laugh in my face about how expensive brakes were for the Dakota. They were the only shop close to where we lived and it was our only vehicle with us at the time. Next time I know better to at least drive it somewhere else and get a second opinion. I will never go back to Sears for anything. Shortly after I sold the Dakota and bought a Honda.

This must be Chrysler policy to recover what they are losing on the ball joints. I live in Mexico City and the dealer came up with the same scam , they told me front and back brakes were nearly worn out when I took the jeep in for the recall. I told them to show me and when I looked they were only half worn, I'd changed the front pads only 6,000 miles earlier (they cost $137 from the dealer). The first set only lasted 12,000 miles, must be all the city driving and I'm sure you use the brakes alot more with an automatic. I've just bought a set of LUK pads for the next change, not sure how good they are, but only cost $38!!

My hubby used to work at Firestone....not for very long though!!! ( he quit, didnt get paid worth s#*t!!!) He is a very thorough mechanic and he takes his time...they pay by the job and the other guys were doing their jobs as fast as they can just to get it out the door and the money in their pocket. Well to make a long story short, one guy was doing an oil change and was in so much of a hurry that he ...ooopppsss...FORGOT TO PUT MORE OIL BACK IN IT!!! (dropmouth)
Needless to say, Firestone replaced that guys whole motor!!!!!

SO PLEASE.....NEVER GO TO FIRESTONE!!!!!

funny, the place i usually take my cars to is a firestone, or used to be.
Never had problems with them. I had the same guy work on my car most of the time, now since they moved, and pretty much overhauled everything (except for my service manager, he's cool, and always hooks me up with free stuff here and there, like wipers, and 10% discounts). Whenever i get my oil done there, i watch the new guys do the job...pretending i want to learn how to do stuff...they are cool with it, and they tell me lil things here and there.....

Suffice to say, i trust them more than my dealer, but then again, i've known the service manager since 98, and he's taken good care of my previous car...
my uncle and a few close friends of mine takes their vehicles there too, and no compliants

I think that what type of experience that we have at service places has much to do with what type of management is in place and what type of policies that they implement. Some stores are good in some places and not others. I think that is just the way it is. :-k
