Drive shaft ?

2007 Jeep Liberty, was driving yesterday on highway and the drive shaft fell off. Had it towed to my mechanic and he refused to take it saying it would cost $3000 to $4000 to fix it. He said the car was totaled. I don't disagree, the car is probably worth $2000 or so. I have never had a drive shaft fall off and I am assuming its not only the drive shaft (according to mechanic) Anyone have any idea what it would cost to repair ? Thanks

Without knowing if it was front or rear driveshaft, what all else was bent, twisted , beat and where its a shot in the dark trying to help you
Pictures or more detail would help a whole LOT !!

I imagine the mechanic simply doesnt know what they're doing.

Some shops don't want to install used parts or warranty work on an old car. They miss out on their customary parts markup. They burn mechanics time with a lower rate of return. They have plenty of high paying customers and can afford to turn down work. Look for another shop, a part-time mechanic, a retired technician, etc who's hungry for work. Source your own parts if you can. Good luck

You would need to fix the rear axle as it looks like the shaft of the pinion gear sheared off

Pick up a rear differential and drive shaft from a junk yard
Or from someone parting one out 2-300 bucks
Easy enough to switch out
Doesn't look like the bolts were even bolted up
Has anyone worked on it recently ?
Make sure its from 06-07 and same gear ratio
I have never seen a pinion break like that from normal driving , done it drag racing but ,......

Thanks for your help, "I have never seen a pinion break like that from normal driving" Same here, I heard this loud **** and then the car wouldn't move. I was in the right lane of the highway cars beeping at me, finally someone with a truck pushed me off the highway.

Is it a 4x4? Does it move in 4HI?

it is 4X4 and I tried 4Hi and nothing

Do you have the one with part time and full time 4x4. If it is part time only, you have more issues than the rear end

Wow, that is not what I was expecting. Like Tom said, just get a used rear axle and driveshaft.

Sure would like to know what caused that. Maybe something in the diff let go and caused the diff to lockup? That doesnt just happen for no reason. If the Jeep rolled, then 4hi should work. The pinon gear is loose inside of the diff so it could just lock up.

Need to make sure something didnt happen to the tcase or something else first.

I keep going back to that picture and the bolts look like ( at least from the picture ) to be OK ???

I have never heard of this ether, things happens. Found another mechanic who said it was a "easy" fix. Time will tell, thanks for all of your help !!!

I may be seeing it wrong, but it looks like the 4 bolts did their job. They held the rear yoke to the flan g e. It looks like the rear pinion just sheared off. seems to be a pinion issue not a bolt issue?
