This is my first post so please be gentle.

This problem is very similar to another post I found on these forums with the same title. Here is the link http://www.jeepkj.com/forum/f196/electrical-problems-p1491-p1682-41911/

I had the same 2 codes with my 2003 Jeep Liberty. I was driving to work one morning a few days ago and my check engine light came on. Perhaps 20 seconds later my battery warning light came on.

I drove it to a local garage ( Not a Jeep dealership ) and let them have it for the day. They replaced the radiator relay and told me it was also the reason for my battery warning light to be lit.

Here it is a few days later and my battery warning light is lit up again with the code P1682 which I checked using the ignition on off 3-times trick.

I am worried that the relay was fine and in fact its my alternator causing the issue. I was charged a lot of money to replace the relay ( $89.95 for Diagnostic scan - $80.50 for the relay and $59.96 for labor )

Any advice on how I should handle this with the garage?

Wanted to add an additional note:
I had no problems driving home after the battery warning light came on again and this was with the headlights, radio and heater on.
I let the Jeep sit ( off ) for about 45 minutes before I left to take it to the garage. When I started it up, the battery warning light was NOT lit. It did light up again about 5 minutes later while driving down the highway.
It is at the garage now so I do not have access to it.
I called a local Pepboys and they quoted me $280 to replace the Alternator.
I have not looked up prices for PCM but I do know they can be expensive.

if you can, hook up a multimeter to the battery terminals while its running. you should have about 13.5 or more volts. If not then the alternator may be bad.

Somewhere between being sane and insane!

Maybe and maybe not as the voltage regulator is not located in the alternator on a KJ.

The only way to test the voltage regulator and alternator correctly is via the DRBIII or Starscan(depends on year of KJ).

I just wanted to post a quick update to say thanks.

It turned out it was my alternator. I was a quick fix and all is well in Jeep world once more.

Thank you for the help here and in private messages.

This is my story exactly. Only I do not have the p1682 code. I am planning on doing the alternator and the radiator fan relay both tomorrow, but should i just do the alternator for starters?

Doesn't matter where the voltage regulator is, if you don't have 13-14VDC at the battery terminals, then you are not charging the battery, and is likely the alternator. If voltage regulator is separate, then additional testing is required to figure out which one is truly bad, the alternator or the voltage regulator.

I replaced the alternator and the Radiator Fan Relay and the Jeep is as good as new. ALL the problems are now resolved. The KJ is running great. Thanks mostly to you guys here on the forum, oh and the Mopar service manual. ;P

Glad to hear it Ian. Now if I could get my KJ back from the shop. I'd be as happy as you!
