engine knock can't locate

A cold engine knock sound (not a tick or clack) that goes away when the engine gets hot, is likely to be "piston slap" (piston rocking and skirt hitting the cylinder), due to having excessive cylinder wall wear, giving more clearance between the piston and wall. The reason the sound goes away when hot is because of the piston expanding from the heat.
