This is an effort to share experience and knowledge related to replacing a Liberty 3.7L engine specifically for a 2003, but I am 99.7% confident that it also applies to 2002 and 2004.

Theoretically, this checklist should also apply to *all* Chrysler PowerTech 3.7L V6 motors regardless of vehicle (find compatibility list here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_PowerTech_engine ), but there are going to be nuances regarding how certain parts (in the list below) map to a particular model and/or/year.

If you buy a reman engine, the vendors generally offer an "Complete Installation Kit", which is supposed to include everything you need to swap the engine. There is no guarantee that such a kit has reliable parts. If it is an option, do not buy it and spend the saved money on the parts listed below.

Only buy parts from the following Manufacturers. Be careful about Amazon "OEM" parts because it is mostly chinese bootleg garbage, visually identical but functionally trash, you will end up buying the recommendations below anyway, and chinese hustlers will laugh all the way to the bank. True parts will be in sealed Manufacturer packaging.
1. Mopar, wherever possible but a lot of items are obsolete and unavailable, in which case Crown is excellent.
2. Crown Automotive, which is explicitly Mopar OEM and readily available through Quadratec ( https://www.quadratec.com/ )
3. Bosch (example: fuel injectors)
4. NGK (example: copper spark plugs)

The following list is your installation checklist. If you are going to do this right, there are (a) required items, (b) recommended items, (c) and troubleshooting items.

The items you can replace easily have an asterisk (*), the items you can replace with some mechanical tinkering and a couple of hours have a pound sign (#), the items best left to a garage have a dollar sign ($).

Strongly recommend you follow the list of required/recommended entirely because if you are replacing an engine for a 2002-2004, that engine and everything hanging off of it is past logical/realistic/statistical end of life. There is not one mechanical item attached to a 2002-2004 Liberty that has a life expectancy past 150K miles. So even if you score a low mile Liberty that is ripe for a new drivetrain, the required/recommended items will minimize downstream frustration/confusion.

Download the KJ Repair Manual (you can find it out here on jeepkj.com), and look up the various components listed below.

New Sensors REQUIRED:
1. Oil pressure (OPS) *
2. Camshaft (CPS) $
3. Crankshaft (CKP) $
4. Intake Air Temp (IAT) #
5. Mass Air Pressure (MAP) #
6. Coolant Temperature (CTS) #
7. Throttle Position (TPS) *
8. O2 sensors #

Filters, Pumps, Valves REQUIRED:
9. PCV * NOTE: You must be very careful about disconnecting the old PCV, READ THE MANUAL
10. Crankcase Breathers (qty: 2) *
11. Intake Air Control Valve/Motor (IACV/IACM) *
12. Evap Canister Purge Valve *
13. Air Filter *
14. Oil Filter (next oil change)

Fuel Ignition REQUIRED.
15. Spark Plugs * MAKE SURE ALL 6 MATCH, copper, NGK is excellent
16. Ignition Coils * MAKE SURE ALL 6 MATCH, Mopar or Crown
17. Fuel Injectors $ DO NOT BUY REMAN INJECTORS, BUY NIB, and MAKE SURE ALL 6 MATCH, Mopar or Bosch (you can do this but you need a special hose-connector tool to remove the fuel rail and there is a serious threat of damage due to lack of experience with such things. Let a garage do it.)

RECOMMENDED replacements if you have not done so in a while
17. New battery * Buy a premium battery with high amps. Autozone has great warranties.
18. New alternator * Buy a premium alternator, not "good enough". Again, Autozone has great warranties.
19. New Relays in PDC *

That's it. However you may still have issues. Once you have done everything above, but still have problems like weird phantom rough engine behavior, read on. The following is only recommended if you finish the swap, do EVERYTHING above, and have engine related issues.

TROUBLESHOOTING replacement items:

20. Bad PCM. A lot of people have cured engine problems with a new PCM. Buy from Flagship 1 (lifetime warranty, rock solid, good Customer Service). If you still have the original PCM, this is a worthwhile investment anyway because a PCM is a computer, and I have never had any kind of computer last more than 10 years. Have you?

If a new PCM makes no difference in engine behavior, the only remaining culprits can be Electrical or Fuel Line.

21. Confirm that you are getting strong signal and power to the Fuel Injectors and/or Ignition Coils.
a. Any garage can check the power going to your Fuel Injectors and Coils. Breaks and shorts are distinct possibilities.
b. Make sure steady power is making it to the cylinders. You can DIY with a noid light, or have a garage electrician do it.
c. Make sure that *all* connector housings on *all* sensors, injectors, coils, intake air control motor/valve, evap solenoid, etc are intact and able to lock.
d. If there are any broken locking tabs anywhere, remove the connector and splice/heatshrink a new pigtail.
e. The "nuclear option": I did overkill by completely replacing the entire circuit for my FIs and ICs because I suspected a short somewhere on either one/other/both, so I fabricated 1 bypass harness for FIs and 1 bypass harness for the ICs all the way from the PCM and the PDC using unspliced wires. If you decide to do the same, see my "How to" for fabricating bypass wire harnesses for (a) Fuel Injectors and (b) Ignition Coils. All part sources and instructions are included, read the whole thing, take your time, do it right.

Irregular fuel delivery will make an engine misbehave. Fuel line troubleshooting is expensive and time consuming. The following requires dropping the fuel tank, but could be done in a driveway in a few hours. I suspected a possible fuel delivery problem on my KJ, but it turned out to be something else. You may not be as lucky, and if so you have my sympathy.

Anything except the Fuel Pump itself is relatively simple but time consuming.

HOWEVER, if you are ultimately forced to replace the fuel pump, there is a specialized seal-ring that is obsolete and only available from a salvage yard, which makes working on the fuel tank a significant risk, but replacement is possible.

If you drop the tank and the ring is corroded, find a complete salage yard replacement for the entire tank and everything hanging off of it. If you are comfortable with dropping a fuel tank and going DIY, everything other than the fuel pump itself is external to the tank and very easily accessible once the tank is detached. The basics are:
22. Evap Fuel Vapor Canister #
23. Fuel Filter $
24. Leak Detection Pump $
25. Fuel Flow Management Valve $
26. Fuel Pump $ + RISK

***The "significant risk" regarding the Fuel Pump***
a. There is a specialized fuel tank seal-ring that is obsolete and only available from a salvage yard.
b. Nobody manufactures these things and this is a car-killer if you need one and cannot track one down. This stupid, specialized seal-ring is the greatest risk when dealing with the fuel system. If the Fuel Pump goes bad, you must be able to either reuse or replace the existing seal-ring. No ring, no fuel pump, no fuel, no Liberty.
c. I kept vigilant when prowling the yards for other parts, and I lucked out and found a garage-kept 2003 at a local yard.
d. I detached all of the hoses and electrical connectors from the tank, cut the 2 straps and removed the entire tank and everything attached to it, with the old fuel pump still sealed inside, from the vehicle and brought it home.
e. This way I can wrangle the tank on a workbench and salvage the valuable ring carefully without wrecking it.

The above info took months of research, and trial and error, and I hope it helps someone down the line. If any clarification is needed, ping this thread and I will do my best to help out.

I’m just wrapping up a similar transplant now as well. I swapped in an 04 into a 2002 job 1, which meant a lot of other issues not covered in other write ups. For example the job 1 Libby had a different transmission, so I had to change out the flex plate and starter as well.

Although I have the other engine in and running and driving, I’m having some serious gremlin issues. For example; I keep getting all the 02 sensor heater circuit errors, comes and goes. Sometimees it’s just one error other times it’s 6! I have re grounded the main ground wires twice now and traced the O2 wires with an ohm meter and seems to be ok, at a complete loss now?

The other issue driving me bonkers is a random knock or ping that comes and goes, sounds a bit too aggressive to be valve train related and too high pitch to be a rod bearing, I pulled the valve covers numerous times and inspected and don’t see anything wrong with the valve train. I then pulled off the torque converter acces plate and inspected for loose bolts and there fine too, it sounded like it was timing chain/set related so I replaced the entire set with new tensioners as well, no metal in the oil or filter so at a complete loss now? It’s worth mentioning the donor motor didn’t knock or have any error codes before I pulled it.

Also, mine wasn’t a reman. Although I wish I would have went that way now. The only motor that will will work in a 2002 is another 2002. Possibly 03 depending on man date. In short I had to split both motors and swap the crank shaft reluctors and camshaft sprockets to make rhe 04 work with an 02 pcm. In hind site I should should at least rebuilt the 02 block, lots of lessons learned and still learning on this project.

Nice list- I am afraid I should have found this before I swapped motors- it was a used motor anyway, so I lucked out on a few things LOL

Observations:
If your original engine blew a ring, or anything else that caused filthy/smokey exhaust, that will trash your O2 sensors and catalytic converters. This will cause all kinds of runtime problems. Any good garage should be able to diagnose a bad cat. Use new, sealed box upstream and downstream NTK O2 sensors (2 on each side, total of 4 if you do all of them). Davis cats are reliable.

I thought I had a bad valve causing a knock. Not so. Had a garage perform a diagnostic and confirmed excellent compression on all cylinders, no leak-down detected. So the pinging/knocking wasn't a bad engine. Everything in my checklist could contribute to a rough engine... but start by thinking about fuel delivery/ignition:
1. Pull ALL plugs and inspect. NGK solid COPPER plugs, gapped to .044. I fixed a rogue slight/occasional knock because the problem cylinder was gapped to .034 instead of .044. This fires the fuel mix. Use regular gas, midgrade and premium affects detonation delay which may confuse the PCM feedback loop.
2. Visually inspect your fuel injectors. If they are different colors, you need to replace all of them with an explicitly matching part number set of sealed-box (a) Bosch injectors or (b) Mopar. Not cheap chinese bootleg garbage, not "rebuilt" injectors, new Bosch-certified parts. The metering of the injectors is critical and a mixed set will confuse the PCM.
3. The last fuel/ignition aspect is the ignition coils. If the coils are >150K miles they are past EOL. Make sure they all match mfr and part #. I bought Crown Automotive coils, which are identical to Mopar, https://www.crownautomotive.net/Liberty-Ignition-Coils.html.

Those 3 items completely smoothed out the engine and it runs like a sewing machine. Did I need to do all 3? Maybe not, but I now know that all I need to do going forward is to replace the copper plugs every 36K miles, the rest of the ignition system is 100%.

Yes, the original motor had a detonated piston with quite a bit of damage in #2 cylinder, so after I put a proper plug in, it was billowing white smoke, (the seller tried hiding the dead cylinder by crushing the spark plug gap so it wouldn’t fire). So yeah I didn’t think about the o2,s getting trashed thanks for that. I just thought it was electrical as the errors will come and go some times one or two sometimes all four, ( high voltage and heater circuit error) and the last thing I want to do is start throwing parts and moeny at an unknown issue.

Another known issue is the Crank sensor. The OEM was broken during removal, upon first start up I had a crank no start situation, upon trouble shooting found the cps to be the culprit. I put in an after market car quest one and if fired right up however after a few starts began to hard start and rough idle after investigating further so many folks claim this is one part you can’t use after market, it simply has to be oem. I returned that cps for another CQ and it fired up and ran good however after about 20 miles it’s acting up again so I know I need to replace the cps however, I’ve searched the local dealers and to the end of the internet and simply can’t find one as it’s been discontinued for some time.

This may be an option, I haven't used one but FEBI are good quality, the OEM part number is on the information so you may be able to search using that for a US stockists.

I think what you are talking about is the *sensor* at this point... not the cam/crank, right? If so, I strongly recommend that you buy any/all *sensors* from either (a) Mopar directly, or (b) https://www.quadratec.com/ . Quadratec sells Crown Automotive manufactured OEM parts that are high-quality 99.999% duplicates of Mopar originals.

Strongly recommend against using Autozone, Amazon, etc retailers because all of their stuff is cheap chinese garbage with significant unreliability. It may work initially, but if it goes out a year from now you'll go insane trying to track down the root cause on downstream problems. Example: "I replaced the O2 sensors with amazon OEMs last year, so they're practically new..." ...and the nightmare begins.

Again, I apologize for delayed response time as I don’t get the time I wish I could on this project. So I did infact order and replace all O2’s the MAP and the CPS from the crown site provided, thank you. After about 150 miles on the road after replacing all the sensors, I’m still in the clear fingers crossed, no CEL no O2 error codes however, belive I’m now dealing with some intermittent detonation knock and hard starting scenarios, so I took it off the road again untill I can figure this next issue out. I have described the symptoms in another thread on this forum, believe it’s the “multiple error codes after engine swap thread”.

Observations:
If your original engine blew a ring, or anything else that caused filthy/smokey exhaust, that will trash your O2 sensors and catalytic converters. This will cause all kinds of runtime problems. Any good garage should be able to diagnose a bad cat. Use new, sealed box upstream and downstream NTK O2 sensors (2 on each side, total of 4 if you do all of them). Davis cats are reliable.

***UPDATE***
Do not trust Autozone gapping recommendations (or any other online retailer spec for that matter). Use NGK V-Power COPPER plugs gapped to .040. From experience, using .044 gap is wrong and will produce choppy cylinder detonation, tendency to stall, jerky gear shifts... and the gap will widen as the plugs are used, which creates more resistance, and makes the choppy detonation/etc worse.

If you happen to be marching through this checklist, I also recommend that you clean your throttle body (henceforth "TB") as long as you are doing any/all of this other stuff...

A dirty throttle body (henceforth "TB") can cause a variety of symptoms including:

1. Tendency to stall when stepping on the gas (especially from a cold start), while the car is in gear and idling
2. Gagging acceleration (until engine gets to running temp)
3. Fluttering gear changes
4. "Banging" into 2nd gear
5. Growling WOT

Clean the TB thoroughly.

1. If you have a 2002-2004, the throttle should be controlled by a braided cable. Two of them actually on my KJ (the 2nd cable goes to cruise control, so you might only have 1 without cruise control).

2. If you have a cable-controlled throttle, it only takes about 10 minutes to pop the hood, remove the intake ducting to expose the TB,

2.1 Disconnect the TPS (throttle position sensor) and IACV (idle air control valve). DO NOT BREAK THE LOCKING TABS. If it turns out they are already broken, buy replacements. Go slow and use your marbles.

2.2 Disconnect the braided throttle control cables (there will be 2 if you have cruise control).

2.3 Unscrew the three 8mm bolts that hold the TB in place. Be careful not to drop anything into the gaps in the manifold, spread a cloth around the base of the throttle as a precaution before you start unscrewing anything.

3. There is a special gasket (looks like opaque white silicon to me) that creates an airtight seal between the base of the TB and the manifold intake. Make sure that is nice and healthy looking. Leave it stuck in the manifold.

4. Once the TB is out, *remove the TPS and IACV sensors* from the TB. This is very important because cleaning solutions are generally a mixture of acetone and toluene, which will eat anything that is plastic, and that is 95% of what the sensors are made of. Be careful to not strip or snap-off the star-head screws used for the sensors. NOTE: the IACV *does have* an o-ring that you must hang onto for reattachment, the TPS *does not* have any o-ring, make sure you account for that IACV o-ring, make sure it isn't stuck in the TB, and do not let it drop into the manifold!

4. You should end up with an aluminum bare-metal TB. Now work that over with CRC Throttle Cleaner...


...use lots of q-tips, terry towel rags, brass brushs, toothbrushes, whatever until all old residue is gone. There are a couple of pass-thru ports that you must thoroughly ream out. Keep at it until all buildup is gone.

5. Put everything back in reverse order. Attach the sensors to the TB (hand tight plus 1/4 turn or so) remembering to seat that IACV o-ring properly otherwise you will have a vacuum leak, attach TB to manifold by setting screws to finger-tight, and then in a circular pattern progressively tighten the 3 screws to 100 ***INCH***/lbs (per manual) which is equivalent to 8.33 ft/lbs. Reattach sensor cables, vacuum hoses, intake duct, etc.

6. Recommended option, replace the Intake Air Temp sensor too as long as you are at it ($25 kit from Autozone that includes the sensor and the connector pigtail). Top of manifold same side as TPS and IACV. Use dielectric grease on sensor connectors, see YouTube for examples of application.the 3 screws to 100 ***INCH***/lbs (per manual) which is equivalent to 8.33 ft/lbs. Reattach sensor cables, vacuum hoses, intake duct, etc.
